This model radiates fairly evenly from the firebox on all sides. The airflow and layout of your basement will have the biggest effect on how efficiently the stove heats the area.

A wood stove will radiate more heat upward than outward, as hot air naturally rises. It would travel upwards toward the ceiling and then distribute throughout the room.
