When you say it is not air tight, do I have to worry about carbonmonoxide?
-
gtcoalman· 15 years ago
you should always worry about carbon monoxide - use co detectors and test periodically.

If the stove is fired properly and you have a good chimney this will not be a problem as all of the smoke from the unit will exhaust outside. A stovepipe thermometer is the best way to ensure that you have enough draft without over-firing.

This is a porous cast iron stove and carbon monoxide is not a problem with the burning process. Being it is not air tight means it will emit some smoke.

No....I'm not sure who stated it's not airtight....this is designed as an "airtight" stove, meaning that the firebox has an airtight design that allows you to control the draft air entering, to really slow the burn down if desired. (Mine is open draft to start the fire, then I push the lever all the way in to really get a slow long burn.) I have no worries of carbon monoxide...two detectors in my home, and I burn 24 hours in the dead of winter...never any issues, and I'm a firefighter and wouldn't take chances. Great stove, and very safe.

how shipped?
Is stove shipped as you put together or fully assembled?
-
jdcurtis· 12 years ago
You must bolt the feet on and assemble/install the damper in the pipe. The stove itself is assembled.

Just bolt on the legs

ProductExpert31· 12 years ago
There is minimal assembly for this stove, you would need to bolt the four legs to the bottom of the unit along with hand form the venting (oval opening at the top of the stove) using single wall pipe.

200,000 BTUs?
This pot-belly and some of your other stoves seem to be advertised in a way that could mislead consumers. You rate this stove at 200,000 btus. That's about what a central-heating furnace puts out. From the looks of the stove, I am wondering if you added a zero inadvertently.
But you do this with other stoves too. So I write this as a heads-up. Someone could possibly accuse you of misleading advertising.

Each fuel whether its propane - natural gas - wood - coal - all have a different BTU rating of their own. You need to understand its not the size of the stove or furnace so much as its the fuel used to produce the heat from it or BTU's. Sure a larger wood stove can produce more BTU's with a larger fire box. Wood has a much higher BTU rating than natural gas which most likely you use in your furnace. A furnace requires a heat exchanger - blower motor - duct wook & a safety housing to cover its works - all things that add to its size. I don't see in my opinion where the 200,000 BTU rating is misleading what so ever. Example - how ever simple it may be - stand in front of a camp fire compared to an electric heater & see which puts out the most heat its just a simple comparison I know. May I suggest looking up BTU ratings for different fuels. This little stove heats my 1,400 sq. foot house & only using my furnace blower to circulate the heat from it. Cheers

When fully loaded and properly fired this stove will easily put out the advertised amount of heat.

This pot belly stove is rated and tested for BTUs by the manufacturer (Vogelzang), it is in fact 200,000 BTUs.
This stove is not air tight, so it does not distribute the heat as well as a furnace would but it is correctly rated.

Fire starting
How do you start a fire in this stove?
How are ashes removed and where are they removed from?
-
gtcoalman· 14 years ago
best way to start coal - clean out bottom ash - lay 5 pounds coal bed - lots of dry kindling wood on top - open bottom vents and go - 1/2 hour later with good draft your firebox gets to 400 F ad more coal - 5 pounds at a time - dont smother your fire
your burn is a function of draft - your draft is a function of chimney height
remove ash from bottom tray

ProductExpert6· 14 years ago
To start the fire you would open the stove pipe draft and the spin draft on the ash door. Then use small twigs or crushed paper. Open the feed door and put the paper or twigs on the floor and then top with kindling. Light the paper or twigs and close the door tightly. Close the spin draft and adjust the pipe draft.
Do not allow the ashes to become higher than the grate. Cool completely and vacuum or shovel out the ashes.

How close to the wall
Space an issue for me. I have to put this in the corner of my dining room. How close can I go to the wall with a heat shield? Is the heat shield sold separately? Do I need a heat shield on the floor?
Who can I get to install this?
-
playtime· 14 years ago
I installed mine using heat shields on the walls "corner installation" behind it and on the floor. First I contacted my building department to find out what they required - the building code for any wood or pellet burning stove. It can be different from state to state or local building departments. I live in Michigan & my township requires a heat shield behind a stove and on a floor. If I didn't install the rear heat shields I would have had to keep it at least 36"- 42 inches from the walls - the code can be different for a stove installed in a corner such as in my case. The floor required a heat shield or non-conbustible base that extends so many inches out front of the stove. I purchased my heat shields locally because of our building code required a certain type. I strongly suggest seeking professional advise. Cheers

ProductExpert25· 15 years ago
A heat shield is not needed as long as the minimum clearance to the combustible surface is met which is 36 inches from a sidewall, backwall or corner. A floor protector is recommended as stated in the product manual. Installation is recommended to be done by a professional.

can i hook this stove up to a stainless liner that used to go to a oil fired boiler
took out oil boiler and want to hook a wood burning stove to it
-
playtime· 13 years ago
I installed basically the same stove so I contacted my local building department to find out what they required. I was required for a chimney to have triple walled chimney pipe where it passed through any part of a combustible area such as the ceiling and or roof. In other words I had to run triple walled pipe through the ceiling all the way up until it exited my roof and it had to be a certain height above my roof line. Now below my ceiling I was able to use double walled chimney pipe if I chose to but I ran triple walled interlocking chimney pipe from my Magic Heater on up through the roof and below it I used double walled pipe. Where I live because of so many fire issues our local government agency or building department has a very strict code but at least I know its done properly. I also found out my insurance company could have denied a claim if there ever was an issue if they found out it had not been installed properly. Thus I know its done to code and its safe. Cheers

The manufacturer recommends using only stainless steel triple wall chimney pipe if going through the wall or ceiling and stove pipe when directly coming out of the stove.

clearance space issue
I am limited on space, and i notice this stove requires 36 inches, is that 36 inches from the back of the stove to the wall, or 36 inches from the front of stove to the wall. also, if i brick the wall from floor to ceiling with firebrick, can the back of the stove be about 12 to 16 inches away from the wall and still operate safely? this stove will be in a cottage I'm building that will be lived in full time, so safety is an issue more than if it was to just heat a workshop.

This is in my opinion you should check with your local building department to be safe.If your concerned in regards to safety I would pull the required permits and than have it inspected. In doing this your insurance company should not have any issue some companies are becoming very strict in regards to free standing stoves. I have installed one similar but I used a fire proof backer board made out of cement and I used bricks just to be safe and don't forget about the floor depending what you will have. I have mine about 15 inches from the wall and you also need so many inches in front of the stove opening for safety in case a spark fell out while either loading or cleaning the stove. You also have to make sure the chimney if installed properly again your building department will make sure its properly installed also. I am a safety minded person also so I was more than willing to pay for the permits to make sure mine was installed properly. Yes it cost me some money for the permits and the inspection but I know mine is done right. Some people are not willing to pay for the permits but if one wants to be safe such as you or I than please do it. Plus in my area sense its a free standing stove I was not accessed like one would be for a fireplace. Cheers

The clearance on this stove is measured from the back of the stove to the wall. If you place this next to a completely non-combustible wall, (a brick wall with wood studs behind it would not be acceptable) then the clearance would be 18 inches.
