A receiver hitch cargo carrier’s hitch class rating determines what type of vehicle it can be used on, as well as its tongue weight (TW), which ultimately determines its weight capacity. Even though a carrier fully loaded (GTW) has a weight capacity of 2,000lbs., if the tongue weight (TW) capacity is 200lbs., cargo must be limited to 200lbs.
Hitches are divided into 5 classes, which help you determine which type is appropriate for your vehicle, and ultimately, the weight limit for your carrier’s load.
Class 1 has a 1 1/4in. receiver size and is commonly used for cars and crossovers; it has a gross total weight (GTW) of 2,000lbs. and a tongue weight (TW) of 200lbs.
Class 2 also has a 1 1/4in. receiver size and is typically used for cars, crossovers and minivans, has a GTW of 3,500lbs. and a TW of 350lbs.
Class 3 has a 2in. receiver size and is typically used for trucks and SUVs; it has a GTW of 8,000lbs. and a TW of 800lbs.
Class 4 also has a 2in. receiver size and is typically used for trucks and SUVs; it has a GTW of 10,000lbs. and a TW of 1,000lbs.
Class 5 is divided into two categories: Xtra Duty and Commercial Duty. Xtra Duty has a GTW of 16,000–17,000lbs. and a TW of 2,400lbs.– 2,550lbs. Commercial Duty has a GTW of 18,000lbs.–20,000lbs. and a TW of 2,700lbs.
