Blasting Media
Northern Tool + Equipment has a great assortment of abrasive blasting media to use with your abrasive and sandblaster machines. We carry glass, aluminum oxide, coal slag, steel grit, plastic, walnut shell, corn cob, and soda abrasive blasting media. Glass media efficiently cleans steel, aluminum, wood, concrete, stone, and fiberglass, leaving a smoother, brighter finish, and doesn't produce much dust. Aluminum oxide abrasive blasting media is the most widely used abrasive grain in blast finishing and surface preparation because of its cost, longevity, and hardness, all while creating very little dust. Aluminum oxide is great for cleaning cast iron, steel, stainless steel, removing chrome, powder coating, surface preparation, rust removal, and glass etching. Coal slag abrasive blasting media is generally used in a pressure or siphon blaster when paint, rust, and scale must be removed from steel, such as car/truck frames, tanks, heavy machinery, farm equipment, etc. Coal slag media is generally used once and is not recommended for use in a cabinet blaster. Coal slag is one of the most economical abrasives and is the best choice for large blast projects.
Steel grit abrasive blast media will quickly strip many types of surface contaminants from steel and other foundry metals. Steel grit is softer than aluminum oxide, does not fracture as easily, and leaves a very smooth finish, making it ideal for aircraft and aerospace applications. Plastic abrasive blast media is typically used to strip aluminum and fiberglass. Plastic media is also great for stripping paint, light oxidation, and surface rust. Walnut shells abrasive blast media is a hard fibrous grit product made from ground or crushed walnut shells. When used as a blasting media, walnut shell grit is extremely durable, angular, and multi-faceted, yet is considered a soft abrasive. Walnut shell media is ideal for aluminum, brass, wood, fiberglass, and other surfaces where no pitting is desired. Finally, ground corncob abrasive blast media is used for cleaning delicate surfaces such as wood, stone, block, and glass. Northern Tool has the abrasive blast media you need for every application.
