I don't recommend a fiberglass ladder; stick with aluminum, make sure there's plenty of room for a drop-down set of guide wheels to travel along the sides of the ladder, i.e., room to clear the rung attachment points

What is the recommended ladder type? Can you use a fiberglass ladder extension?
Is there a ladder rating that would be preferred?-

Aluminum is cheaper than fiberglass. If you plan on cutting 10 ft. logs, make sure you have a 12 ft. section of ladder. I had to buy a 24 ft. extension ladder, but the first log that my son milled up, paid for it. Better to have the extra length and not need it that to need it and not have it..

The recommended type of ladder should be aluminum with no preferred rating.

Any brand saw that works for you, that is at least 55cc's. Use a ripping chain for easier milling. Make sure that your sprocket, bar and chain are all compatible.

It is recommended to use a chain saw with a 50cc engine or larger. Northern does carry several of these. A particular brand is really buyers choice but the less expensive, bottom end models might not hold up as well under heavy use. See below for some available chain saw options.

2 Questions.... 1: What is the smallest diameter log this will mill???
Question 2: What is the difference between a rip chain and one I would buy at my local hardware store???
I am very much interested in this product because I would like to mill logs where they are felled so I don't have to drag them out with heavy equipment and tear up the ground...-
oakmill· 8 years ago
The smallest log i have cut was 8" but you could cut 6" if you had to. You just won't get too big of a plank or beam from it.
The rip chain cuts at a different angle than the standard cross cut chain. Rip chains can be ordered on line for about $25-$35 depending on the size.

5 - 6 inches is the smallest diameter log that this item will mill. A ripping chain is recommended for use with this application as they are designed for sawing parallel with the wood grain.

The unit comes with ladder clamps to secure the ladder to wood as is shown in the picture on our product webpage. The ladder and the wood does not come with the sawmill.

Maximum Log Diameter
I know they say you shouldn't go larger than 14" in diameter., but I have a Stihl 880 with a 36" bar that I would like to go up to 16-20" logs. What is stopping me from put a bigger log onto the mill and mounting my saw and ripping away?
-
oakmill· 8 years ago
I was ripping 20" oak logs with no problem, the hardest part was getting the heavy logs onto the mill. I set up a ramp a bit higher than the holding bar to allow the logs to be rolled without lifting.

ProductExpert6· 9 years ago
The unit is designed to be used with a maximum of a 24" bar. Using a larger bar length would not allow you to use the safety guard or the attached oiler.

Was wondering if this will work with milling coconut lumber overseas and what size chainsaw is recommended.
1 answer-
ProductExpert6· 5 years ago
The chainsaw sawmill would be able to cut coconut lumber. It would require a minimum chainsaw of 60 cc and can be used with up to a 24" chainsaw bar. You would need to use a ripping chain.
