  1. Can you quarter saw lumber with this system?

    I have several oak trees that I would like to convert into picture framing material. Would like to quarter saw them to give an interesting grain effect. Can I use the EZ Mill and Guide rail system to rough cut lumber using a Quater Saw technique?

    1. Yes, you can, although time-consuming you can do it.

    2. You can mill down to 1" thick boards, which after drying could be planed and shaped for framing material. Quarter sawing would capture the flashy grain from oak's radial rays, and yes, you can do this, but you will leave behind a lot of nice oak. You can also mill thicker slabs (2-3") of full width, and after drying, rip the central portions on a band saw or table saw to select the grain pattern you desire, then plane.

    3. Great for 1st cut but you will also need the mini mill to do the 2nd cut square.

    4. This is just the guide and would require the Alaskan MK III portable lumber mill to complete the system. The lumber mill is available to work with 20", 24", 30" or 36" chainsaws. The item number for these are 11879, 11871, 11872 and 11873. You would be able to quarter cut with this system although it could be difficult. You would need to rotate your log 90 degrees for the quarter cut.

  3. Do I need two rail systems to mill an 8 ft log?

    1. Two 5' guides can be connected together using the connector kit, item #11882. We also offer a 10' guide system, item #70635.

    1. The Granberg saw mill system will cut up to 5'. With item 11882, you can connect this 5' system with a second 5' system. A 12' option is not currently offered.

    1. The extension kit will work with the small log mill model numbers G778 and G777. The extension kit does require the model number G1090 connection kit.

    1. The rail kit will work with the model G778-24 (item number 58035) 24" portable chain saw mill. The mill will work with chainsaws up to 24" bar and 50 CC or greater displacement.

    1. This item may only be used with logs that are 12" diameter and larger.

    1. This is for two 5 foot rail bars for a total of one complete 5 foot rail section. It comes with two cross bars to attach the two rail bars together.
