(A & B)= YES to both

A- Yes you can. i have cut 8 inch logs into 5 slices, using the three middle for woodwork.
B- the end pieces of the mill are adjustable out to the length specified by model. i have this 24" model and have used it with 16" up to 28" bar. The 28" bar had the mill set for 24" and we had to make a different (longer) toe guard for it.

You can cut almost any log in half. Make sure you use ripping chain for your bar.
I just uesd a 20" bar to saw up a 20" diameter Red Oak. It was hard to fit, but it worked. I would like to have used a 25" rather then the 20"

Yes, this Alaskan MK III Portable Lumber Mill can cut up to 12 inches deep, and it will work with any chainsaw with a 24 inch bar or less.

I use a straight 2x8 and screw it onto the log then make the first cut 1/2 inch deeper than the length of the screws. Works just fine for me, making slabs for log furniture.

You'll need to either purchase (9ft EZ Rails Model No. G1080) or make yourself a pair of slabbing rails using (Slabbing Rail Bracket Set Model No. G850 with some 2 x 4's). These will be mounted on log parallel to centerline of log (manufacture's supplied instructions are easy to follow). Make your 1st cut. Then all subsequent cuts will follow the flat surface made using slabbing rails. See manufacturer's online videos.

We would recommend the EZ Rail Mill Guide System to assist you in making the first cut for clean precise cuts. See recommendations below.

I'm wondering if it would work to use 2X boards (as surface guides for the mill) cut diagonally from end to end so that the saw would actually cut on a slope on the first few cuts until slabs of desired thickness were produced.
Yes, If you can set short log vertically diagonal, and rig a slabbing guide, all other cuts would be easy. It probably could be fairly easy to rig with 2x4s
Helpful?
Yes the would work. In fact it is how i started with it. The problem is that it takes much time to get them set straight and true. After my third or forth log, i ordered the guide. It is so much quicker as they have levelers built-in.
Helpful?
Yes depending on the way the guide board is set up this unit would cut diagonally end to end.
Helpful?
The handle is in the middle of the unit but can be moved left and right depending on the size of your cut. The handle is only for applying light pressure to move the mill forward and to steady the unit when cutting.
Helpful?
Yes. It's a big help when cutting long boards.

The Alaskan MK III Portable Lumber Mill includes a handle and thickness rails.

I believe Oregon manufactures special chains and even special chainsaw bars for lengthwise cuts like these. Do you also offer any of these special non-crosscut chains and bars for Husqvarna chainsaws?
Using the standard chain would cause rough corners. It is recommended you purchase a ripping chain for your chain saw. Please see below.

Northern #41209 is an 3/8x0.050x 84-link Oregon ripping chain for a 24" bar; Other available from various internet sources

Some on the web will tell you a crosscut chain will mill just fine. My opinion - buy a chain specifically made for "Ripping". The angles ground on the "Ripping Chain" are different than those on crosscut chain. The brand of chain makes no difference, it's in the angles ground into the chain. Take it from someone who has tried both and buy the "Ripping Chain", you'll be milling boards not making pretty firewood. Happy Milling. 1CRAZYLOGGER.

From the chainsaw lines that you carry, what is the minimum size ENGINE would you recommend for excellent performance cutting all types of wood?
I am not asking about bar length but rather recommended power needed to cut oak, locust, etc.
55cc could handle 12-20" logs, 70-75cc better for 20-24"; over 24" you really need 85cc-120cc chainsaws
Helpful?
Buy the largest chainsaw engine you can afford within the MKIII manufacturers recommendations (I believe 55cc is the smallest recommended). I started out with a saw I already owned 41cc & quickly upgraded to a 76.5cc chainsaw. My 41cc was an occasional use saw & I felt like I had to keep giving it time to cool down. My professional use 76.5cc saw will throw chips all day or as long as I can run. Happy Milling. 1CRAZYLOGGER.

With a 24" chainsaw, you should be looking at one with at least 60 cc or 3.7 hp . Northern offers a variety of Husgvarna chainsaws that you should consider. Please contact us by phone for current availability and pricing.

Which chainsaw carried by Northern Tool is recommended for use with this saw mill?
Thank you
55-60cc Husqvarna, (I believe?) is largest Northern carries, which will work with the 20-24" Alaskan; Anything larger, you will need to order from a pro shop/ dealer

I would use a saw that was more then 50cc for making lumber. Make sure to use ripping chain on your bar.It works lots better.
Helpful?
Any of the chainsaws with a 12 - 24" bar can be used with this lumber mill.

I know the saw doesn't come with the mill but I've heard that not all parts shown in picture are included. Are accessories needed that are not shipped as pictured?
The mill is ready to attach to the saw once put together and make boards. You will need rails to guide your first cut down the tree.
Helpful?
With exception for the saw all parts shown on this product are included. An optional rail kit (shown below) is also available sold separately.

Is there much tendency for these to kickback?
In my experience there wasn't much of a kickback but as the chain gets dulls it tends to happen a bit. The biggest issue is using wedges to keep your cut elevated the longer down a board you go. Otherwise the cut part pinches the bar which of course increases the chance of kicking.
Helpful?
For the Alaskan MK III Portable Lumber Mill it is recommended to use ripping chain which will reduce the chance for kickback while milling lumber. The kickback will depend on the type of chain being used and the chainsaw.

I know it will cut a slab 12 in. thick but I want to know what is the largest diameter (width) of log.
I have milled a 20 dia log with this setup
Helpful?
The largest log width this Portable Lumber Mill can handle would be about 22 inches in diameter.
