  1. Can this spray gun be used with latex paint?

    1. Yes. However you may have to thin it slightly with water.

      Helpful?

    2. Yes, but works better with 10% water added. I got a great smooth finish using a 5 hp, 60 gal compressor and 25 ft of 3/8" hose at 25psi on the gun.

      Helpful?

    3. Yes this spray gun can be used with latex paint.

      Helpful?

  2. I plan to use this 2.3 gun for gel coat on a Corvette but can I use this gun for epoxy primer or will the 2.3 tip be too large?

    1. I have both guns (1.7 and 2.3mm). The 1.7 is perfect for auto epoxy primer, so I suspect the 2.3 would throw too much material and you'd end up with runs.

      Helpful?

    2. Yes, it will work just fine as long as it’s not reduced. If you plan on reducing the primer then I would suggest item # 4519018. Please see below.

  3. what compressor is needed to provide adequate air flow?

    1. I used the 2.3 Vaper with a Sears 1 hp, twin compressor. I sprayed GelCoat - 5 coats. Sure, I had to wait sometimes for the compressor to "catch up," but it presented no problems. I think the airflow at 40psi was something like 6-7 cfm.

      Helpful?

    2. The compressor would need to produce the required 7-9 CFM for this spray gun.

  4. Can gun spray epoxies

Need to apply smoth thick topcoat of epoxie for restoring antique claw foot bathtub.

    1. I sprayed Gelcoat thinned to 10% ... so West Systems Epoxy could be used the same way and thinned accordingly.

      Helpful?

    2. The Vaper HVLP model #19023 has a 2.3mm tip which is capable of spraying epoxies.

      Helpful?

  5. Can you purchase different size nozzles for this gun

    1. I was unable to find any nozzle and needle kits, so I spent the $40 to buy another gun. I do suggest buying the same brand so the wrenches and cups will work on both. You can be sure that a nozzle kit would cost $20 or more, so you may as well just get the whole gun.

      Helpful?

    2. This unit only has the 2.3mm nozzle which is the only size for this gun.

      Helpful?

  6. Will this spray unthinned gel coat?

    1. It will need to be reduced about 5-10 %. I use it often for this.

      Helpful?

    2. Yes, this will spray gel coat that has not been thinned.

      Helpful?

  7. Oil based paint?

Would this be a good gun to use oil based exterior paint to paint a wrought iromn fence outside? I need something that will minimize overspray or fogging.

    1. Yes, it will work. I sprayed Rustoleum rusty metal primer (oil based) on patio furniture using a Vaper 1.7mm gun. It worked but was too slow. The 2.3mm gun would be better. The bigger problem will be getting enough air through a long hose. I could not get a nail gun to work at the end of two 50 ft hoses, so a paint gun would be very iffy. A portable compressor with shorter hose might be better, but cfm could be an issue.

      Helpful?

    2. This gun would not be the best choice for oil based paint. This one is best for high build primers or epoxy. I would suggest the gun with the 1.4mm size for your oil based paint, item #4519000.

  8. Can I use this to stain my deck?

    1 answer

    1. Deck stain will require nozzle sizes between 1.5 mm to 1.8 mm depending on the viscosity of the stain. See recommended sprayers below.

      Helpful?

  9. Can I buy a smaller cup for small jobs

    1 answer

    1. The spray gun smaller cup would have to be the same fitting size but Northern does not carry a smaller cup for this unit.

      Helpful?

  10. can this gun spray the new plastic dip paints?

This new paints are peelable plastic paints made by DYC (dip your car) Thanks. If not do you have any recommendations?

    1 answer

    1. This spray gun is an HVLP sprayer. HVLP or a high end turbine sprayer are the recommended types of sprayers for dip painting so this gun should work just fine.
