The locking brackets shown are also threaded and must be turned/threaded off. So, if a lock is on it, the two separate locking brackets will not be able to be threaded. Although it is possible that the bolts for the entire carrier could be loosened, it is very inconvenient to be able to reach a wrench or socket set in to get at the tire side of the bolts. As we all know, we can only deter theft, not stop it completely because if someone wants to take it, they'll find a way.

Locking Brackets??
Not sure how they work. From the pictures, what is to keep them from simply loosening the lug bolts and taking the tire? If the lugs are on the inside of the tire, what keeps them from unbolting the entire carrier from the trailer? There must be something I cannot see.

yeah ... same thing i thought until i took them out of the box. they are THREADED! mystery solved. so i put them on over the tire and put my master lock on - and there it is. its nice since they add additional support to the tire mount overall. yeah, you can unbolt the whole assembly so then just use a lock-nut like some car tires do. this will at least keep the opportunist on the move. hope this helps!

The locking tabs are threaded, once each tab is threaded on, then locked together, they can not be removed since they can not turn. It is really a simple concept but very difficult to get the message across. You are correct on the mounting hardware. Being a bolt on system has its limitations and additional precautions may need to be taken.

The spare tire carrier includes free locking tabs. These tabs are threaded on one end and open on the other to accommodate your lock choice. This very simple but effective set of locking tabs can be used on either side of the lug nuts depending on your own unique application. Once the tabs are threaded onto the lug bolts and locked together, they become a very effective method to secure your spare tire investment.
Once the lock is on the bolts cannot turn, so they can not be loosened.

will it mount on angle iron frame
1 answer-
UltraTowExpert12· 5 years ago
Because of the bolt-on design, mounting this bracket on an angle iron frame is not recommended.
It is designed to mount on a trailer tongue up to 3" wide.Helpful?

Mount horizontally?
This mount would work well for carrying my spare horizontally under the tongue, but this does not match the instructions which specify vertical mounting. Is there some reason that it won't work in a horizontal configuration? Note: my spare only weighs 25 lbs.
1 answer-
UltraTowExpert· 10 years ago
This Ultra-Tow Spare Tire Carrier is not designed to be mounted horizontally. Using it in another application would put strain on the product and would void warranty.

How long are the hex bolts? Also, what is the distance between the front and back of the bracket?
Or how far would it be from the bumper to the rectangle steel the wheel would mount to?
1 answer-
UltraTowExpert11· 3 years ago

Will this work with a 15 inch wheel with a 5 bolt pattern on 5 and 1/2 inches?
1 answer-
UltraTowExpert11· 3 years ago
The spare tire carrier will work with 15 inch rim with a 4 hole on a 4” bolt circle and a 5 hole on a 4-1/2” bolt circle. It will not work with a rim that is a 5 hole with a 5.5" bolt circle.
