The actuator is designed for use with free-backing trailer brakes. Free-backing design lets you go in reverse without activating the trailer brakes. If you do not have free-backing brakes you must use an electric solenoid valve so the brakes do not activate when shifted into reverse. Generally, the solenoid is grounded to the frame with one wire and then wired into the reverse circuit of the trailer connector. Installation and wiring will vary from application to application however.
