Product Summary

The RDS Vertical Fuel Transfer Tank is designed for transferring diesel fuel, gasoline or aviation fuel from the bed of a pickup to automobiles, heavy equipment, boats, 4-wheelers, generators, or anything else requiring fuel that you may have. Enjoy the convenience of a gas station that goes where you go. DOT approved aluminum fuel tanks do not rust, which protects fuel from contamination. The tank can also be used as an auxiliary unit to provide additional capacity for a diesel factory tank with the use of an RDS diesel install kit (Item#s 3490901, 3490902 and 43748, sold separately). Diesel install kits will work with any RDS tank with a drain fitting. Auxiliary tank function is for use with diesel fuel only and is not for use with gasoline, which cannot be gravity-fed. It is the user's responsibility to comply with local, state and federal requirements pertaining to safe transportation, loading and discharging tank contents.

  1. Rollover Safety Valve

    The Rollover Safety Valve seems to have a hose barb.

    Should a hose be attached to it?

    What is the purpose of this valve?

    1. the valve is there to let air into the tank as you use fuel out of it. but it also will close if you roll the truck over to keep fuel from spilling out. if a bug or dirt gets jammed into the valve it will not close in a rollover and will leak fuel. put something on the barb to keep dirt out of the valve. for me that means a hose to a filter under the bed rail.

    2. Yes, a hose should be attached to the rollover safety valve, the roll over safety valve is the vent for the tank.

  2. Is there a pre drilled hole in the tank for gravety feeding the trucks fuel tank?

    1. This RDS fuel tank is equipped with a 3/8 inch drain for gravity feeding diesel fuel (not approved for gasoline transfer) into an existing truck fuel tank. Please see our item #43748, #3490901, or #3490902 for diesel install kits that can be used to tie this tank into a truck's fuel system.

    1. The fill cap could not be located on the other side of the fuel tank.

  6. I see the gravity transfer/feed kits listed. Thank you. I do not see a sending unit listed/available? Could you please provide a listing/link to or for compatible sending units and gauge. Thank you.

    1. The part number for a sending unit for this transfer fuel tank would be 09602. You would need to purchase a marine gauge for it. Northern Tool does not offer either of these.

  7. Will this work for gasoline?

    1. The tank can be used with gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel. The auxiliary function can only be used for diesel, it cannot be used with gasoline.

  8. Do the exterior dimensions include the height to the top of the gas cap?

    1. The height of the auxiliary/transfer tank of 22 1/2" would include the gas cap. The height without the gas cap is 20".

  9. For RDS 45-Gallon,Vertical, Mdel# 71083. I am planning to gravity feed this tank for my 2006 Duramax. My truck has a camper shell Is the gas cap a none vent gas cap and does this tank have a vent I can run a tube to vent fumes outside/underneath truck?

    1. The gas cap on this fuel tank is non-vented. It has a rollover valve on top that would be for venting the fuel tank. You could connect a tube to the rollover valve to vent it outside and underneath the truck.
