What is the dba rating of this unit?
-
LeviSHP· 8 years ago
75 dba is the manufacturer rating. I tested this and was never able to get it that high as the generator only gets that loud when pulling at 100% capacity

Don't know, but I listened to it outside my bedroom window for 5 days after Irma and didn't go deaf. I heard it running but it wasn't like having a Harly Davidson in the back yard.

Item #750142. Does unit return to low idle when it isnt under load?
-
LeviSHP· 8 years ago
Yes, Even on the Eco-OFF function it will go to a lower idle than when under 80% load. with the Eco-ON it will ramp up and down to keep the generator running. Great for RV's or homes when there is no constant high power draw

The Powerhorse 9000 has a very efficient throttle control. Located on the control panel, a switch will adjust the throttle, up or down, to compensate for the electric load of the generator. Plug in the refrigerator and engine speed compensates for the load. Unplug the fridge, and the unit QUICKLY returns to idle.

When the throttle control is set to off, the unit will return to low idle under no load. When the throttle control is set to on, the unit will remain at higher RPM under no load.

How often should one restart the generator, while not in use, to make sure the electric start works properly?
-
Bill1515· 6 years ago
I would run it at least once a month for about 30 minutes. 5 minute warm up, 20 minutes with a load on it (60watts or better) and a 5 minute cool down.

-
PowerhorseExpert31· 7 years ago
This generator should be run for 10-15 minutes every 4 weeks with a small load plugged in, such as a lamp or fan.

auxiliary fuel tank
Is there an auxiliary fuel tank that is compatible with this generator
-
Bill1515· 6 years ago
I wouldn't recommend it. The generator needs to be turned off after a few hours to cool down and you need to check the oil level too. 30 minutes should be allowed for the cooling (less in cold weather). A good time to cool it down is when it needs refueling. Give it a good look over to to make sure you have no leaks or any other potential problems.

At this time Northern Tool does not sell any sort of auxiliary fuel tank that would be compatible with this unit.

Charging battery
When the generator is running, does it recharge the
onboard battery?-
EASTERN· 7 years ago
I connected a 12v car battery which I leave on the floor to my old Coleman generator for easier starts in cold weather. I have a battery tender constantly trickle charging it. During outages I plug the the tender into the generator.

This Powerhorse generator does not feature a charging system to charge the battery while the unit is running. The battery will need to be removed and charged with a charger/maintainer.

The manual requires you use SAE 10W30. SAE 30 oil and SAE 10W30 are not the same. You should definitely follow the manufacturer's specifications.

The recommended oil for this generator is SAE 10W-30, which is automotive oil. The recommended temperature range is -5 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. In warmer weather, 50 degrees Fahrenheit and higher, SAE 30 can be used. In colder weather, 30 degrees Fahrenheit and colder, you can opt to use SAE 5W-30 oil.

I am seriously thinking about buying this unit, is there a brreak in period and how do you go about it?
-
HawksTalon· 8 years ago
You can start using the generator immediately. You will have to change the oil after the first 20 hours of use and then change the oil every 100 hours of use afterward. That's the only break-in type process involved, changing the oil after 20 hours to start out.
Helpful?
-
PowerhorseExpert11· 9 years ago
The break in time for this generator is 20 operating hours. Change the oil and perform a maintenance check after the first 20 hours and then at least every 100 hours after that. Complete break in details and a maintenance schedule is listed in the owner's manual.
