Product Summary

This NorthStar® Horizontal/Vertical Log Splitter is powered by a quality Honda GC engine. The 4in. x 24in. cylinder splits logs up to 25in.L in either in a vertical or horizontal position. Features a 2-stage Concentric pump, which decreases cycle time by delivering high flow/low pressure when there is no resistance and low flow/high pressure when cutting through a log to reduce travel time and increase productivity. Uses a horizontal-shaft engine, engineered for a long life. Add the exclusive NorthStar 4-way wedge wings (Item# 1143, sold separately) to quarter logs in one split instead of three.

    Auto return is equipped?

    1. Yes there is an auto return on the log splitter.

    3. Once the control valve is actuated in the return direction, the wedge is designed to keep returning by itself completely and then stop automatically.

  2. When log splitter is shipped to your house how much assembly is requried?

    Like how many parts do i have to put togehter before i can use it?

    1. It took a couple of hours to put together and you need a helper for one of the steps because of the weight of the splitter. Otherwise, the directions were easy to follow and it went together very well.

    2. You need to assemble the frame/trailer section which is basically a big T. The axle unit is also the hydraulic tank. You also need to attach the wheels.

      Once that is assemble then you bolt the ram unit to it and also the motor. The hydraulic ram with rail is heavy. I used a come-along to raise it in a verticle position and then rolled the trailer part up to it and bolted it on.

      The instructions are pretty good. It took me about 4 hours to put the whole thing together.

    3. This NorthStar log splitter is packaged twice but on the same crate and wrapped. The first box is placed on top of the metal crate containing the engine and pump assembly. The second is the metal crate containing the main sub-frame and cylinder.

    1. No but I have not seen the need for shielding in my work.

    1. Not on this machine.

    2. The unit does not have an inline filter. It does come with a strainer on the suction line inside of the hydraulic tank.

  6. I get that it will split wood but does it have to be seasoned? Will it split trees that I just felled?

    1. It will split green or seasoned. Stay away from sweet gum. it's had to split green or seasoned

  7. Does this 22 ton splitter have the low oil shut down feature?

    1. Per Honda Owners Manual which came with the splitter, yes there is a Oil Alert system which will shut down the engine.

    Does this engine have the same auto idle feature as the 30 ton? Also, I signed up online for a NS credit card. I noticed the deferred interest option. Is this or do you have like a 6 month same as cash purchase option on the log splitters like Tractor Supply? Thanks, Chris

    1. No it does not idle down but you can run this engine at 2/3 power and it is quite and will still bust most every thing you can pick up.

    2. No, This NorthStar 22 ton log splitter is not equipped with the auto-idle feature, however it is offered with our 30 and 37 ton log splitters.

  9. What is the PRACTICAL advantage of the 30-ton splitter vs the 22-ton splitter???

    1. The 30-ton splitter will negotiate severely knotted sections better, but if all you are dealing with is highly figured wood, you may not notice a difference when using the 22-ton; I haven't.

    2. The practical advantage is that you will be able to split larger diameter harder wood with a 30 ton splitter without stalling the hydraulics than you would be able to with a 22 ton. The 30 ton splitter is able apply 16,000 lbs. more force to a log. If you regularly split woods like oak or ironwood I would definitely recommend going to a 30 ton splitter.

  10. NorthStar 20 ton Log splitter Model 1170

    I have the above log splitter and was wonder if the NorthStar Wedge wings for 4way cutting would fit my log splitter or do you have slip on that would fit.?

    1. This log splitter, item #1108, doesn't have the same splitting wedge as your model, item #1170. The wedge wings are not compatible with your #1170 splitter. Northern Tool doesn't carry wedge wings or a 4 way slip-on wedge that's compatible with the 1170 model.
