NorthStar's best horizontal/vertical log splitter has a multi-patented design that gives you premium components and exclusive features that let you save time and energy. This log splitter has a Honda GX390 engine, a premium filtration system and a high-speed towing package. The backbone of this log splitter is an industrial-strength I-beam with heavy plate steel reinforcement. The patented wedge design, made with alloy steel, maintains consistent split and has a unique curve that reduces initial contact area for maximum penetrating force. The NorthStar Wedge Wings make each stroke more efficient. Auto-return wedge saves time and effort when splitting.

The premium hydraulic system is protected by a quad-filtering system that uses four different components to protect the hydraulic system from contaminants. Large hydraulic oil reservoir allows fluid to cool, reducing wear and allowing fluid to last longer. Slide-action self-leveling pivot makes it simple to switch between horizontal and vertical split. Designed to be easy to use in both orientations. Ultra-Tow Ultra-Pack high-speed hubs, torsion axle, 12in. high-speed tires and integrated trailer lights make it easy to get to the worksite. Some assembly required.

  1. Is hydro fluid included in this package?

    1. No, you will need about 15 gallons of fluid. I used three pails of 18L each.

    2. No. The manual says the machine holds 11 gallons of hydraulic fluid. Mine took almost 15 gallons to fill it up including cycling fluid into the filter and actuator.

  2. Log length and cycle time?

    What is the maximum log length that the unit can split, and what is the cycle time from fully retracted to split?

    1. The owners manual says the complete cycle time is 14 seconds. I have not timed mine but this sounds about right.

    2. The owners manual says 16" diameter logs are the max. That's about as big as logs get in my part of the world, but I'm sure this machine would split a much bigger log.

    4. This log splitter accepts a max log length of 25". The length of time from when the cylinder/ram is fully retracted to when the log is split can vary from 7-10 seconds. This time will vary due to the length of the log and the hardness of the wood you're splitting.

  3. Since this splitter has lighting, Will I be required to License it to pull on the road?

    1. Local laws will be different for each area.

If towing on a public road, make sure to comply with all local, state, and federal towing requirements. Please check with your local DMV for requirements in your area. It is the sole responsibility of the purchaser to obtain licensing, trailer lights, safety chains or signage, as needed to comply.

    4. This depends upon your state's regulations. Many states due to the width of the machine would not be required to have a license. However, please check your home DOT rules and regulations. If in doubt contact a vehicle inspector with your State Patrol.

    1. No. However, the engine start quickly and does not require an excessive amount of force to pull the cord.

  5. Is there anyway to put an hour meter on this?

    1. Yes, I successfully installed an hour meter on the engine and used the one identified as YueYueZou® Waterproof Tach Hour Meter Tachometer for 4 Stroke Gas Engine Motorcycle ATV Snowmobile Boat.

  6. Need to change Hydraulic Oil?

    Bought my 37ton in the Fall and used it for about 15 minutes to make sure I assembled it correctly. It stayed in my outdoor shed over the winter months. Should I change the hydraulic fluid or am I ok for this new year where it will get some regular use?

    1. No, I don't believe it's necessary to change the fluid after only 15 minutes of use. If I recall correctly, the owners manual recommends fluid change after 100 hours of use.

    2. Need to change every 100 hours of operation or each year oil in tank. I am going to drive mine to a quickie oil change place to dump all the oil, prior to refill.

  8. Tongue weight when towing

    I would like to pull the log splitter behind a fourwheeler, but it has a limited capability for supporting tongue weight. Do you have an estimate for the tongue weight?

    1. I don’t believe tongue weight will be an issue. It’s fairly easy to pick up with one hand by the hitch when moving it around.

    1. I don't know what the rating on the hoses is, but the hoses are high-quality, wire braided, multi layer hoses that are more than adequate for the intended application.
