you need a cord that can handle 20 amps of power I would personally use a 10 ga extension cord or heavier

Extension Cord
Since my shop has a wood floor I will be doing all my welding outside in the driveway. I need a 25-50' extension cord to get there. What size do I need,12/3 for 25' or 10/3 for 50' sound right?

Always use the largest cord available... for maximum life of the tool and best quality welds.

Using an extension cord with the Northern Industrial Welders Flux Core 125 115V Flux Cored Welder is not recommended. If an extension cord is necessary, make sure the cord can handle 120 volts and carry 20 amps. The size of the cord will vary depending on the distance being traveled. We would recommend contacting a local electrical supply store to ensure requirements are met.

What welding wire to use ?
Can someone please tell me if I can use 2# Hobart flux core wire in the Flux Core 125 Welder? My instructions only says to use only a 4" or 8" spool.
-
Daveinexas· 11 years ago
I grabbed a 4" spool and it was 2#. Works great. Basically, more # means longer wire and fewer replacement spools.

I am using a 2lb spool (not sure of the brand) and it works fine. Would surmise that it will work just fine as long as it feeds thru the tip and will fit on the reel.

I don't know the spec's on the wire you mention. It is set up for .030" flux core steel wire and will work with .035 (which I prefer) if you change the contact tips. If your wire is either of these and on a 4 or 8" spool it should work.

I know this unit has a wired variable speed control, but is it a continuous wire feed unit? If not how is the wire feed with varialbe speed activated
-
Hangown· 12 years ago
There is a trigger to control the flow of flux core wire
Helpful?
-
nnwelder· 13 years ago
it is a continuous feed, it will feed until either you let go of the trigger or the wire runs out, but be mindful of your duty cycle
Helpful?
-
Pelter· 13 years ago
Feeds the wire from a spool. As long as the trigger is pulled it will feed the wire. Turn the wire feed knob to speed up or slow down the feed.
Helpful?
-
ProductExpert38· 13 years ago
The wire speed is controlled by a knob on the front of the unit. The wire will begin to feed, at the designated speed, when the trigger on the torch is pulled. The wire feed will stop when the trigger is released.

It's a standard Tweco-type nozzle, so the Hobart tips work fine. Once you throw some good-quality wire in it, the tips last much longer.
The Hobart wire they sell at NT works great, I use the smaller rolls of .030 wire. Set the tension right and forget about it, just spray and pray.

Will this unit weld 14 gauge steel tubing to 14 guage steel tubing for fence construction?
-
nnwelder· 13 years ago
yes 14 ga tube steel is just over 1/16 inch thick, this machine can weld up to 3/16 inch steel

JoeFromRichmond· 13 years ago
Sure will, but be sure to keep the puddle moving. Flux Core gets very hot, so you can blow through if you dawdle.
Be sure to keep ventilated if it's galvanized tubing, too. You don't need to breathe that stuff.

Amp pull
I read it produces 125 Amp for welding. How many Amps does it pull from the 110 circuit.
-
GWA64· 12 years ago
It's rated 115 Volts (110 is not really used in North America). Any standard 115 receptacle (household type) is rated 15 Amps, maximum. I'm not sure of the rating (I would guess about 10 - 12 amps), but it would have to be below 15 Amps.

What is the input amperage on this welder?
-
vcb999· 12 years ago
I do not know for sure what the input amperage is but I was welding 3/16" material. It was plugged into a 15 amp circuit and did not trip the circuit breaker. Suspect it will operate on any non-overloaded circuit you might have.

ProductExpert6· 12 years ago
This welder plugs into a standard 110-120 volt power outlet. The welder has a maximum 20 amp draw at 115 volts so the outlet it plugs into must be on a 20 amp protected circuit breaker.

Is the wire feed mechanism replaceable or upgradeable?
This is a northern 125 amp flux core welder
-
vcb999· 12 years ago
Do not know. Are you wanting to add a larger spool? Manual says it will take a 4lb or 8lb spool. Our local welding supplier only sells 2lb and 11lb spools. I put on the 2lb so I do not know if it will take the 11lb spool. You would need to be doing some serious welding to run thru a larger than 8lb spool that quickly.
