  1. Will this work on a covered outdoor patio?

    The covered area is walled in on three sides, so there should be very little wind.

    1. Would work great. But has exposed pilot light you have to protect from wind.

    2. This unit will work on a covered outdoor patio. It just will not be able to work in an outdoor environment exposed to the elements like rain and snow. You must maintain the clearance to combustibles of 34in. from ceiling, 30in. from sides of heater, 30in. from back and 68in. from the base.

  2. How does the thermostat work?

    the feature list states no electricity required, but there is a thermostat. How does it run? What controls the regulator? off battery?

    1. Through a thermocouple. No electricity is needed.

    2. It works in conjunction with a power pile thermocouple that generates it's own electrical supply. There is no regulator. The gas valve gets the electrical energy from the power pile thermocouple and the heat from the pilot flame. There is no battery. Simple easy installation.

    3. The thermostat is connected to the gas valve on the heater. You would set the thermostat to the off position. Turn the manual gas control knob on the gas valve to the off position and wait 5 minutes to allow any gas that has settled to escape. You would then turn the control knob to pilot. Light the pilot with a match. Hold the knob down for 30 seconds to allow any air in the gas line to pass through the pilot. Let the the thermocouple heat up enough to activate the safety valve in the open position. Then you release the manual gas control knob and turn to the on position. Then set the thermostat to desired temperature.

  3. Will this work using propane instead of natural gas?

    1. Two models available. Propane or Nat Gas. Get the right one & you’ll be fine.

  5. Ceiling Height, Space from ceiling & wall

    I'm installing this on a screened-in porch with a 10' ceiling. I probably need to mount it at about 8' to allow air space around the unit. Is that safe for people walking under it?

    1. This heater requires clearances of 34” above the heater and 68” below, to combustibles, so the bottom of the heater will be in the 7 foot range which is very close to heads as people walk near it. It would be recommended to have 8 foot of clearance.

    2. This unit is recommended to be installed in buildings with 12 to 15 feet high ceilings. Installing it on a 10 foot high ceiling would not be recommended. Further the unit needs the following clearances to combustibles distances : 34in. from ceiling, 30in. from sides of heater, 30in. from back and 68in. from the base.

    2. This Mr. Heater Natural Gas Heater has a minimum clearance of 8’ above the floor for public garages in accordance with ANSI/NFPA No. 409 most recent edition. Please see the owners manual for detailed clearance information.

    1. There is no venting with a flue for this Heater.

    2. This Mr. Heater Natural Gas Heater is for building with 12 - 15 foot ceilings. This type of heating requires a minimum intake and exhaust openings that provide not less than 400 CFM for every 100,000 Btu's. Where natural ventilation is provided for exhaust, the opening must be distributed above the heaters, and the areas opening should not be less than 300 square inches for every 100,000 Btu input. Check local code and ordinances before purchasing. Professional installation is recommended.

  8. The specifications state that this heater is not vent free. How is it vented?

    1. You need to have fresh air intake to the specs of the heater. Most garages or shops leak enough air to cover this. Otherwise you can crack a window or door when it's running. I run it in a large 2 car garage and it burns really clean. But you still need fresh air / oxygen. Hope this helps.

  10. my shop has 10 ft. ceilings and approw 32x36 will this heater heat it

    1. My shop has a 12 ft ceiling and is 30 x 20 and is insulated - on a 10 degree day (the lowest i had this winter) i had no problem maintaining 65 degrees. I would also recommend installing a ceiling fan since the hot air rises i noticed it was 10 - 15 degrees hotter on the ceiling - once i installed a ceiling fan there was more uniform temp and the unit cycled on far less than before.

      How large is the area being heated in cubic feet? Calculate area dimensions (Length x Width x Height) = Total Cubic Feet

      What is the desired temperature increase to be gained by the heater? Calculate (Desired temperature(with Heater) - Area temperature(without heater)) = Desired Temperature Increase

      Calculate the BTU's required to achieve desired temperature. Calculate ((Total Cubic Feet x .133) x Desired Temperature Increase) = BTU's Required

      The above calculations are estimates to measure your heating needs.
