Is the top sturdy enough for a laptop

With the top extended, is it sturdy enough to support a laptop? I intend to work on a stool with the lid in this position.

  Yes... open or closed, it is rugged enough to support a standard laptop. The only thing I may see is that depending on what else you have in the cart and how heavy the laptop is, you may want to counter-balance the other end of the cart if it seems a little tippy.

Drawer and top opening

Was wondering if you can open drawers when top is closed and can you open one of the top sides at a time or do they both have to open together.

  Depends on the length. There is no place to hang anything super long. You are limited by the interior width of the open top or the drawers.

  The keyed locking mechanism only locks the top sliding trays. The drawers are locked until the left sliding tray is moved out to the side.
