It;s recommended to use a ripping chain as it will produce a smoother surface on the cut board.

depending on your chain saw pitch and gauge also length a ripping chain is recommended but a regular chain saw blade could be used just dulls quickly

The type of chain that would work best on this product would be a ripping chain. To find the correct ripping chain for your saw you would need to know the chain gauge, pitch and number of drive links. This information will all be stamped onto your chainsaw bar.

How long of a log can it cut?
I am going to be making some furniture out of some oak and mesquite trees that are on my property and was wandering how long of boards I can get out this mill. Any help would be appreciated.
-
Jesper· 8 years ago
The only limit to the length of the board is your initial guide for the first cut and the support you can provide to hold the log.

This lumber mill has no restriction as to the maximum length of a log it can cut. The length of log it can cut is determined by the length of the EZ rail mill guide system (or your own system) you are using to set up your first cut (thereby keeping your subsequent cuts uniform). Click the links below to view the EZ rail mill guide systems.

How do you make that initial first cut?
-
Jesper· 8 years ago
You can use a number of different "guides" for your first cut, I use an "engineered floor joist " as its light and fairly straight but you will have to cut it to length.

For the first cut, a flat surface will need to be attached to the log. This is done with the mill guide systems in the links below for the most accurate cut, or a 2” x 8” wood plank. After adjusting the cutting depth on the chainsaw mill you can make your first cut.

Description says it will cut a log that is 24" diameter, but the max width board will only be 20". This makes no sense. Isn't the board you are cutting just a cross section of the diameter? In other words your 24" diameter log will produce 24" wide boards

ProductExpert11· 2 years ago
The sawmill measures 24" end to end. When mounted on a 24" bar, the mill will typically occupy approximately 6" of the bar space. This will give it a cutting width of 18".

Is this a complete system? Or do I have to buy other things to use it?
1 answer-
ProductExpert6· 3 years ago
You will need to provide the chainsaw. It works with chainsaws up to 24". You may also want to add the EZ rail guide system, see item #11880 for a 5 ft crossbar and item 70635 for a 10 ft bar. The item #11882 would be a connector kit, if you want to put more than one rail together.

What is the easy rail?
1 answer-
ProductExpert31· 5 years ago
The EZ Rail is a rail system from Granberg to allow for a flat and straight first cut. The rails are attached to the top of the log and the mill rides along the rails for the first cut. This gives each additional cut a flat surface for the mill to ride on. This system currently consists of item #11880, #11882, and #70635.
