  2. I am looking at the 4000lb. winch. This sentence "Duty Cycle: 3 minutes on and 20 minutes off" is in In the specs area. Does it mean that the winch will run 3 minutes and pause for 20, or something else?

    1. The duty cycle for the winch means after 3 continuous minutes of work, the winch will need 20 minutes off/rest.

    1. The unit may be used with that application so long as the weight limit is not exceeded.

  5. How much cable will the spool hold?

    1. This Dutton-Lainson winch holds the 50' of cable that comes with it. It can not be modified with a longer cable. That would change the performance of the winch and effect the pulling power.You could hook extra cable, chain or tow strap with matching or higher weight capacity to the hook on the cable and do multiple pulls if needed.

    Can the remote cable be lengthened to 20 ft.?
    Can the winch be positioned or attached to an I-beam to lifet a platorm 12 feet in the air?

    1. The Dutton-Lainson Electric Winch is a winch, that like all winches, is designed to pull horizontally not lift vertically. For lifting you would want to use a hoist. Modifying the remote cord would void the warranty.

  7. What are the overall dimensions?

    We are mounting on a wooden beam. How would that be accomplished?

    1. This electric winch features overall dimensions of 11 5/16" L X 8 3/4" W X 8" H. For mounting purposes, be sure that the mounting surface is of sufficient strength to support a load well in excess of the rated winch capacity. Then fasten the winch to the trailer winch stand (or other mounting surface) with three 1/2" bolts, nuts, washers and lock washers. Be sure that the winch is positioned so that the cable does not rub the front opening of the winch.

  8. Pulling Power

    I have a Hewitt Dock that weights approximately 1800 pounds. It is a roll in dock with wheels on both ends. In the fall I need to pull the dock so that the front wheels are to the shore. The rear wheels need to be pulled up about a 40 degree incline which is roughly 3 feet from bottom to top. Once the rear wheels are past the incline I can just about pull the dock the rest of the way by hand. I need something (a winch) to make the pull up the incline. I need to secure the winch about 20 feet from the shore as there is nothing close by to secure it. So the math is a 20 foot distance from winch to pull point, plus an upward rolling pull of about 3 feet on a 40 degree angle for a dock that weighs 1800 pounds. Is this winch too much for the task and if so what would you recommend. Thank you

    1. This Dutton-Lainson Winch would do the job for your dock. You will need to know that the motor does have a 3 minute maximum run time. if you run longer than that, you will need to let the winch cool down for about 20 minutes.

  10. where does the emergency handle attach

    for strongarm winch

    1. An emergency crank handle is provided for use in the event of a power failure. Remove the electrical power from the winch. NEVER OPERATE THE WINCH ELECTRICALLY WITH THE EMERGENCY HANDLE IN POSITION. Remove the plastic plug from the side of the winch housing and insert the handle so that it completely engages with the drive shaft. The handle can be cranked in either direction with the clutch in the engaged position. To make cranking easier, the clutch can be placed in the free wheel position while holding onto the emergency handle.
