  1. What are the frame tubing and axle diameters?

    I have 1.1 acres of lawn to treat. much of it is rather rough in spots and I am concerned about durability of the BS36BH.

    1. Dont now the diameters but it is very durable it will handle any terrain

    2. My front yard is over an acre with some rough spots/tree roots and lots of twists and turns. I loaded it with two 40 pound bags and spread at full speed with my riding mover. The unit is built very solidly and the pneumatic tires absorb a lot of shock.

    3. U will have no problems with this unit run the tires a little low and the rough ground should present no obsticle. I have two acres of very rough terrain.

    4. The frame tubing on this Brinly-Hardy broadcast spreader is 1.25 inch in diameter-14 gauge steel, and the axle is 5/8 inch in diameter.

  2. Will this unit handle dolomite lime?

    I need to spread dolomite (powdered lime for garden / farm) lime on about 5 acres. Will this unit handle the powdered material?

    1. I used the pelletized lime and it did wonderful

    2. No, powdered materials will bridge and rathole and not work because they can't flow. Broadcast spreaders are designed for granular and pelletized materials. You need to use pelletized lime, or, get a drop spreader like that linked below. That style will allow powders to simply fall out of the bottom trough through a gate whereas a broadcast spreader requires materials it can fling. Powders don't fling.

      If you are treating 5 acres, you should consider renting a spreader or if you have a compact tractor with 3 point hitch and PTO, use a conical spreader. A 150-200 lb. spreader will mean you will have to reload the spreader 50 times to spread 5 tons. If you are way out in the field, you're going to drive back to the pallets of lime 50-70 times just to reload before you're done. Get a 700 lb conical spreader and you'll have a lot less laps and save a LOT of time.

  3. What is the spread width? Compatible w/Kubota 22hp?

    1. The spread width is between 12-16'. This is compatible with your tractor, but you would need to keep the speed between 3-5 MPH.

    2. This unit can spread out between 12-16ft and you can attach it to your Kubota, you would just need to keep the speed between 3-5MPH and no more.

  4. How does the unit perform on icy surfaces

    Being that the unit spreads material from the wheels turning,
    how does it work or perform on icy or slippery surfaces?
    Will the wheels skid over the ice and not propel the material?

    1. Yes it works on icy surfaces because the weight of the material in the spreader keeps the wheel engaged. Remember this is not like drive wheel and the only thing the wheel drives is the spinner, so there's very little resistance on it. I use mine to spread material on ice all the time.

    2. When spreading ice melting products use two hair pin cotters, number 40, one in each wheel hub for better traction.

    1. It can spread ash from coal as long as it's not clumped up and in a powder form.

  7. Spreading salt is much more tougher on the machine than seed. does this spreader work well with heavy coarse salt ?

    1. The spreader is not recommended to be used for coarse rock salt. The spreader is designed to be used with ice melt.

  8. Can this be hitched to a pickup truck?

    1. This spreader connects by pin hitch and is designed to be towed at slower speeds. It is not designed to be towed by a truck or mounted to a pick up truck hitch.

  9. Does the axle need lubrication? How should I do this?

    1. You will need to apply grease to the axle and wheel bearings. A manual grease gun would do the trick. Please view the link below to item 75429 and item 75358.

    Will I have to put air in the tires frequently, once a month.

    1. This broadcast spreader includes heavy-duty tires. How often you have to fill the tires with air is ultimately determined by the amount of usage, ambient air temperatures, etc.
