What are your thoughts on using this unit on an outside covered porch?

The firebox is recommended to be installed in a Procom heating mantel. It is not a free standing heater. It is not recommended that the heater be exposed to the elements. For indoor use only.

Can it be sized to a larger opening

This item cannot be sized to a larger opening. Usually the builder/installer will build a structural frame to fit the insert, not modify the fireplace to fit an opening.

The rough opening for a wall installation will be 27 5/8" L x 14 1/4" D x 29" H.

Can the output btu be adjusted so that the fire can be on for ambiance without over heating the room?

The insert will come with a temperature adjustment from 45 degrees F to 99 degrees F. The temperature will be adjusted per the remote included with the insert.
