Handheld vs. Walk-Behind
Deciding between a handheld and wheeled
or walk-behind trimmer is one of personal preference. Handheld units are
lightweight, easy to carry, and small enough to fit into narrow spaces.
Walk-behind units are an excellent option for those who do not wish to carry
a machine. They are also a smart choice for tackling larger areas of heavy
vegetation, as they will allow you to finish mowing the space in less time
than a handheld unit would require. In addition to the familiar mowing feel
of a walk behind,
high-wheel trimmers
can handle uneven and rougher terrain.
Power Source
If you are regularly maintaining a property 1-acre
or larger, a gas-powered trimmer is highly recommended. Gas units are more
powerful than electric and battery-powered units and provide the user with
longer operation time. For these reasons, gas string trimmers will offer the
highest level of efficiency for immense properties. Electric trimmers are
better suited for small yards (½ acre or less), as they require an extension
cord and connection to a plug-in power source to operate. These units are
the lightest of all trimmers. If your outdoor space has a lot of landscape
obstacles, such as trees, choose a battery-powered or cordless electric
trimmer. Although slightly heavier than corded electric trimmers, cordless
trimmers provide users with more freedom and mobility. Charge and operation
times of cordless string trimmers vary by battery type. Lithium-ion
batteries tend to provide more power and run time.
Attachments
Depending on the trimmer you choose, compatible
attachments may be available. Our selection of trimmer attachments includes
edgers, hedge trimmer blades, cultivators, and blowers. For more ergonomic
use of your handheld trimmer, you may also want to consider a weight
absorbing trimmer strap.
