I used 5/8 to save weight. I am old man and not getting any stronger. There was no problem at all building the ramp.

will 5/8" plywood work without alterations?
do the screws that hold the wood to the frame screw in from the side or from the bottom? if from the side, I assume the 5/8" board would make a difference. true?

Actually they are bolts and you have to drill holes in the plywood as they are mounted from the bottom.

The West Ramp Kit is designed to utilize 3/4 inch thick plywood that is screwed to the support beams from the top down. 5/8 inch plywood could be used although you would lessen the load capacity.

what does the underside of the finished ramp look like?
are there flat bars for strength? do the side rails bolt to the wood or are they screwed on?
-
Felixfunk· 10 years ago
Yes the sides are a 90 degree so you get a flat bar on the bottom and sides that will keep wheels from rolling off the ramp. They are attached with bolts from the bottom so you have to drill holes in the plywood. It is very strong when completed.

There are no flat bars. There is an extra hinge if wider then 24". Everything is bolted, no screws

The underside of the ramp looks very similar to the top side of the ramp except the side rails have small extensions for the wood to be placed on. There are no flat bars going from side to side. The wood sections are attached with screws to the side bars.

What holds the ramp in place?
-
emankcin· 7 years ago
for use on a pickup tailgate or flatbed trailer there are two brackets included in the kit that stick out about 4 to 6". they even have a good rubber coating to avoid scratches or slipping.

This ramp features heavy-duty steel fingers with a rubber coating that keep the ramp from sliding and moving. As long as you don't go over the recommended 4' lift height they will hold the ramp in place.

What would the weight capacity be with 5/8" plywood?
the ramp would be 30" wide.
-
ragingseas· 9 years ago
Cant be exact but mine will handle my 200lb all terrain mobility scooter over 19" rise in 8 ft. Not too many items will fit the ramp if they are that big

ProductExpert38· 9 years ago
The listed weight capacity does not take into effect the thickness or width of the plywood because this will vary for each user. The weight capacity is measuring the strength of the guide rails included in the kit. The guide rails have a weight capacity of 600 pounds. 3/4 inch plywood is recommended.

Will a 8 ft ramp work for a 17" rise with a motorized scooter
-
ragingseas· 10 years ago
I have 19" rise to cargo door of my van and the 8' ramp is perfect for my mobility scooter

This ramp will work between any two points regardless of rise. The difference in height between those two points will determine the degree of slope. With a 17" grade variation between ends, that slope would be about 10 degrees. Whether or not that angle is acceptable for you is something you'll need to decide on. That angle can be increased with a shorter ramp or decreased with a longer one.

Approximately how heavy is 8ft ramp when completed?
-
Felixfunk· 10 years ago
Depends on the width you build it. Mine is 24 inches wide and must weigh 50 pounds.

ProductExpert38· 10 years ago
The West Build-Your-Own Utility Ramp Kit comes with the side rails weighing 27 pounds. The approximate weight would be determined by the grade/weight of plywood used to complete the ramp kit.

Weight Capacity
Can I use a thicker plywood? If so can I then hold more weight across it? I'm looking to use it for up to 1,000 pound total weight.
Thanks-
Felixfunk· 10 years ago
Yes, there is plenty of room for thicker plywood. I used 3/4 in and it's rated for 600 pounds.

ProductExpert6· 11 years ago
You could use a thicker plywood. The kit only comes with hardware to attach a 3/4" thick plywood. If using a thicker board, you may need to purchase locally new hardware to accommodate the thicker size. Adding thicker plywood would not increase the weight capacity of the ramp. The weight capacity it is rated at is based on the frame and hinges.

I have two questions, (1) is it made from aluminum ? (2) can you load a riding lawn mower ?
1 answer-
ProductExpert12· 3 years ago
This ramp kit is made from galvanized steel. It will accept 3/4" plywood up to 48" wide and can support up to 600 lbs. It is best to check the dimensions and weight of the mower to determine if this will work for the application.
