ProductExpert35· 10 years ago
Gallons per Minute (GPM) is the measurement of performance on a water pump. It is a constant performance specification with no minimum or maximum range. This pump will transfer water at a constant rate of 5.6 gallons per minute. The water supply does need to be no less than 1/8 inch above the surface (1/8" deep minimum) for this unit to work.

priming
What is the process for priming? One review said it has to be primed with vegetable oil, Do you have to prime the pump with vegetable oil before each use?
-
Wayne Pump Expert· 10 years ago
Yes, if you drain the pump after each use you would have to put vegetable oil in both the inlet and outlet of the pump..
The impeller spins at a high RPM and does need a lubricant to help prevent failure.
The vegetable oil will seal and lubricate the impeller and assist in the pulling of water up through the suction hose.Helpful?
-
ProductExpert24· 10 years ago
It is recommended to prime the pump with 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to both inlet and outlet of the prime. Doing this will help with the pump life.

Maximum water temp.
The product specs calls out a minimum water temp, but not a maximum. what is the max temp and can this be used on a hot water / boiler system?
-
pappy123· 12 years ago
I don't think the rubber impeller would take the heat for any length of time.

The pumps you listed cannot handle the extreme temperature of a boiler system. The maximum temperature for each pump is as follows: Wayne ~ 110 degrees Fahrenheit, NorthStar ~ 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and SHURflo ~ 170 degrees Fahrenheit. At this time Northern Tool does not have a pump capable of handling such an extreme temperature.

Is this pump capable of operating a water sprinkler?
-
Labman· 14 years ago
this pump is not recommended to operate more than 15min at a time. i shut mine down after 15min and let it set for awhile and then turn it on again. besides that, it would seem it would run your battery down using it for a sprinkler for long periods.
