    Also where would I get the winch cable

    1. This winch comes with 90 feet of 1/2 inch cable. It also has the capability to hold synthetic rope.

    what is the advantage, cost, life span as compared to steel, etc.?

    1. Besides safety, there are other reasons you might choose synthetic rope over steel cable. Synthetic winch rope is lightweight (less weight hanging off the front of your Jeep), flexible, floats in water, and is easier on your hands—no barbs, no freezing, and no burning. However Steel rope is ideal for yard work, landscaping, and farm chores. Wire cable holds up better under abrasive conditions. You should not leave synthetic rope in the sun as excessive UV exposure can break down the fibers. Also you should never leave the rope muddy or wet when spooled on the drum.
