Probably not. This heater is intended to augment a space heater, and it does a great job of that.

Works good in my uninsulated two car garage (two heaters). Heats from 55 to 65 in about 30 min. Immediate heat right under units.

It might keep your garage from freezing if you have really good garage doors. It's a radiant-type heater so it doesn't do much in warming the air. The objects in the path of the heat rays will get warmed and pass a little of that heat to the air. I'd say it's pretty "iffy" in Pennsylvania.

Choose The Right Size Which heater model is right for you?
Start by determining the following about your heater needs:
1.How large is the area being heated in cubic feet? Calculate area dimensions (Length x Width x Height) = Total Cubic Feet
2.What is the desired temperature increase to be gained by the heater? Calculate (Desired temperature(with Heater) - Area temperature(without heater)) = Desired Temperature Increase
3.Calculate the BTU's required to achieve desired temperature. Calculate ((Total Cubic Feet x .133) x Desired Temperature Increase) = BTU's Required
The above calculations are estimates to measure your heating needs. Building construction contributes to BTU requirements also.

Can I assume you're not planning on mounting this in a dog house? In a porch, for example, ceiling mounted, the animals would be completely safe in my opinion.

This Heater is listed as a Ceiling-Mounted Workshop Heater, it should be perfectly safe as long as it mounted high enough off the ground.

Is this heater suitable for covered patio heating?
-
DocGladiator· 12 years ago
Absolutely, no problem.
I have 3 of these heaters at an outside covered bar at my home in the northeast and they are quite safe and non problematic to run even under the enclosed roof....which is cathedralized. The heaters are hung/mounted from the collar tie beams, so they are well away from other structures (at least 3 or 3 feet) Two of my heaters are within 2 feet of a fiberglass decoration I have suspended from the ceiling and there has never been any problem with this. I can have drinks with my family in the snow in January under my enclosed bar and they work great, and it's 65-70 degrees for 300 square feet with 3 heaters.Helpful?

We have used this heater in a covered, screened in porch for the last year and a half at a cabin in west central Idaho. The heater is about 7.5 feet above an outdoor sofa and is directed straight down at the sofa. We don't use the heater in the winter, but during the other three seasons we will use the heater in the mornings to take the chill off while we drink our coffee. The heater works well when there isn't a breeze. If there is a breeze then the heating effects are negated. I recently purchased another of these heaters and plan on putting it over another seating area on our porch.

Can I run three of these on a single 15A Circit breaker?
-
mrtinkertrain32· 13 years ago
No. In order to run 3 of these on a single circuit you would need to have 3 outlets (1 for each heater) and a min of 8/2 wire on a 50 amp circuit. Outlets are rated at 15 amps ea. and heavier wire and amps for supply. Best bet would be to have 3 seperate outlets, run 2 outlets on 10/2 wire and a 30 amp circuit and the other on a 15 amp circuit with 12/2 wire. All these fall in the 80% rule.

74lancelot· 14 years ago
no way. It needs one 15 amp breaker for one heater. It draws just over 12 amps.

-
ProductExpert27· 16 years ago
No. Only one of these heaters would operate per 15A circuit.
Helpful?
-
FrontRange· 16 years ago
No.
On high this heater (and all 1500 watt 120volt heaters) draws 12 amps. The maximum wattage available on a 15 amp circuit is only 1850 watts. Only run 1 heater per 15 amp breaker and make sure no other resistance heater devices are running at the same time on the same breaker (coffee makers, griddles, waffle iron, hair curler or dryer, etc.)

can this be wired to a reistat switch or 2 switches because it has two heat seatings?
We would like to install these about 13 feet ceiling mounted. We don't need to be toasty warm, just make a difference when coming in from the outside. THus we would like to install these with switches, but need to acomplish either the two settings or better yet control the heater with a reistat switch if possible. This is for the ProFusion Heat Ceiling Mounted Heater 5200 BTU, 1500 watt.
Thank you.

rawen2· 16 years ago
I don't see why you couldn't control this heater with a standard light dimmer that is rated for 1500 watts. Wire the wall mounted dimmer to a standard 110 volt outlet on the ceiling. Then set the heater's switch to high heat (both tubes on) and control on/off as well as heat output with the light dimmer.

Can't think of any easy way to add a reostat or multi-position switch. The unit has a pull cord that cycles through 4 settings: Off, Light only, Light + low heat and light + high heat. You could leave the unit in any of the settings and wire a simple ON-Off switch to activate that setting. Or you could add a longer cord to the existing pull cord and operate that way.
I would note that at 13ft, I am not sure just how much heat you will feel with this unit. It's only 5200 BTU, nothing like the gas fired ceiling units you may have encountered. I have mine located on a 7ft ceiling and it doesn't get too hot even standing directly in front of it.

13th foot mounting height might be a little high. I have mine mounted at 8' 6". I used 2x4s to make a hanging extension and screwed the bracket directly to the 1-1/2" bottom. Works great. I would not advise a reostat switch, the 2 position built in switch is more than adequate. You could wire them to a switch with the unit's switch on low or high so even with a wall switch you will have to use the unit switch as well

ProductExpert13· 16 years ago
This unit is not made to be wired to an external switch. A rheostat will not work with this unit because the heat settings are not achieved by varying the current to the unit. The first heat setting provides full power to one of the halogen bulbs and the second heat setting provides full power to both of the bulbs. For a heater that has an option wall mounted control I would recommend item # 176540 and the optional control (item # 70008). See links below for more details.
