  1. electric or not?

    We are in the market for a hot water electric pressure washer. This unit says it is electric but it seems as though that is just for the pressure washer side? We are an auto detail shop/hand car wash and operate in a parking garage. The heater I presume runs on diesel/kerosene. My question is can we operate this without outdoor ventilation?

    1. Electricity runs the pump and burner. It requires a 30amp circuit (240v). I would probably not reccommend running the unit inside. I'm sure the manufacturer doesn't reccommend it either, for obvious reasons. Not saying you couldn't. I would simbly purchase enough hose (100') so you could set it outside and still reach where ever you need. Kerosene will burn the cleanest, but also is the most expensive.

    2. Our NorthStar electric steam and hot water pressure washer runs off electricity, the burner for the pressure washer is powered by diesel #1 & #2, kerosene or fuel oil. To operate this NorthStar pressure washer safely, it will need to be vented in accordance with applicable federal and state laws and local ordinances.

  2. Steam pressure washer #157305

    Is this unit big enough or create enough steam to clear ice dams on my roof? I have a small unit that will melt ice but it takes forever to do even a small area. I want to melt the ice in my gutters and in the valleys of my roof.

    If not his unit what do you suggest?

    1. Ice dams are a fairly slow process. I recommend using 210F water vs steam. Get the hot water under the ice and lift it off by hand in small manageable sections. DO NOT spray up the roof.

    2. The number that will determine the amount of time that a job will take with any pressure washer is gallons per minute (GPM). This pressure washer is rated at 1.5 GPM which is on the low side for completing a job such as ice removal. I would suggest that you look for a hot water pressure that will provide at least 2.5 GPM for removing ice dams from your roof. The more GPM that a unit provides the faster the job will be done, so in this case more is better. Keep in mind that the price of the machine usually goes up as the GPM rating does, so the machine that you ultimately end up purchasing will be determined by the value that you put on your time. (more up front cost typically will equal fewer hours of labor). See links below for some suggestions of hot water units that will provide 2.5 GPM or more. Keep in mind that some of these units need to be plugged into an electrical outlet and some of them are stand alone units. The one that will best meet your needs will depend on your specific situation (most of the plug-in units require 230 volt power).

  5. is it enough power to take grease off of axles ,automotive use ,engine grease etc or do i need to go with a bigger machine

    1. We recommend 3000 PSI for that application. We currently do not have an electric hot water pressure in 3000 PSI. I recommend a gas powered hot water model, item 157115.

  6. Does the unit drain water from the heating coil when not in use?

    I would like to know what can be done to get the water out of the coil when not in use to protect the coil from rusting, and freezing temperatures.

    1. To drain water from the heating coil, turn the power switch and water supply off, then relieve the system pressure by engaging the spray gun trigger. Remove the hoses and nozzle and unplug the pressure washer. Let it stand to cool down before storing it. If it will be stored for 30 days or more, refer to the long-term storage section found in the manual.

  7. Steam mode

    When in "steam mode " does it still put out 1.5 gpm ? I was thinking of using this unit for ice dam removal and as I understand the melted ice will make water I am trying to find something that will not add to much extra water into the job.

    1. With the steam nozzle the flow rate will be around 1.3 GPM.

  8. Can you use a turbo nozzle on this?

    1. This pressure washer does not have enough flow and pressure for a turbo nozzle to operate effectively.

  9. Is the chemicals introduced into the pump or on the downstream side closer to the wand ?

    1. NorthStar pressure washers come with a downstream chemical injector that is between the pump and the hose connection.
