Can this unit cut metal as well?
-
Br0308· 14 years ago
No.
Helpful?
-
submachine· 14 years ago
No, Mig welders do not cut metal. I don't know what you want to cut but I use a hand grinder and a bench metal cutter.
Helpful?
-
BigDemps· 14 years ago
It is a WELDING machine, not a torch or plasma cutter, so the answer is "No, it doesn't cut metal, it welds metal together."
Helpful?
-
bemidjisasquatch· 14 years ago
No it cannot, get the plasma cutter for that. This is for welding only, flux core or solid wire, but you need an argon cylinder. Hobart makes a plasma cutter with a built in compressor, it's a pretty slick unit.
Helpful?
-
BrownThunder· 14 years ago
No. It is a welder only

-
ProductExpert13· 15 years ago
This Hobart Handler 140 is designed for welding only. To cut metal, other than by mechanical means, I would recommend a plasma cutter.

Since this is "gas ready" is all that you need a bottle of Argon etc ?
-
LeFrog· 15 years ago
Yes. All connectors and regulator are included. Just need the bottle.
Helpful?
-
DarthVicious· 15 years ago
Yes. Add the bottle, set your gas output around 20-30CFM, switch the polarity of the machine (cable connections on the inside) and you're ready. However, outside on a windy day might blow the gas away and oxidize & weaken your weld so it's best used indoors. The gas allows much thinner welds than flux cored wire with no slag to clean off the weld.

Two questions.
Can I just plug this welder into my wall socket and get to work? Do I need a spool gun to weld, or is that mainly for aluminum. Thanks guys.
-
snakeinthegr· 14 years ago
You only need a spool gun if you are going to be welding aluminum. There are a few minor things you need to assemble, but its pretty much ready to go out of the box. Get yourself a set of gloves, jacket, and helmet, and you are ready to go. They give you some flux core wire to get started, I would recommend switching to gas if you are going to be welding a lot, it will give you cleaner welds. It comes with a gauge you just need to buy the tanks.

-
67camaro· 14 years ago
the spool gun is required for aluminum. You can weld right out of the box with it plugged into a 110 outlet.
Helpful?
-
MustangRich· 15 years ago
Yes, all you need is a regular 110V outlet. A spool gun would be ideal for aluminum, but it can still be used to weld aluminum without one. However for mild steel and stainless steel, no spool is needed.

DarthVicious· 15 years ago
This is what I love about this welder is I don't have to worry where to plug in, however a 20 amp breaker is recommended on the circuit it's plugged into. I have used a 15 amp circuit, but nothing else was on that circuit. The spool gun is mainly for aluminum as the wire is so flexible in comparison to steel welding wire.
Helpful?
-
ProductExpert27· 15 years ago
The welder can weld aluminum out of the box. It helps if you have a nylon liner and keep the hose as straight as possible. If you are doing a lot of aluminum welding you will want to purchase the spool gun and control. (Northern part numbers 164991 and 164994)

Yes. just plug it in and go to work. I recomend useing flux core .030 with gas and if you want your work to look clean use spater spray even on 1/4". Takes a little longer but will work fine.

I am buying this welder for a small bush Alaska school. What items should be ordered with it (wire, tips, helmet etc.)?
-
Elkguy· 14 years ago
You will need additional tips for sure as they burn close once in a while and insure you order a 10lb spool of wire. This unit comes with a cheap helment and you will be better served with an autodarkening model.

Br0308· 14 years ago
This machine will come with 3 tips, but extras are always a good idea. I would also order at least 1 more spool of wire to come with it, even though you can get it from your local hardware/home supply store. The sample spool that comes with the machine will not last very long.

submachine· 14 years ago
Tips, Self dimming masks, wire (big rolls for school). Gloves and Aprons. I think welding magnets help.
I assume you want to use gas so will need a tank from a local supplier.

diyhobby· 14 years ago
get a few helmets and a few pairs of gloves, a pack of 10 contact tips should last you a while. lots of wire. and a medium sized gas cylinder should be good. you could get a welding cart but i just made my own. 4.5" grinder with some wire, cutoff, and grind wheels.

You would definitely want to get welding helmets, extra spool of wire and a cover for storage. The tips would need to be ordered from our parts department at 1.800.222.5381, option #3. If you were going to do much with aluminum you may want to consider the spool gun #164991 and the module for the spool gun #164994. You will also need welding gloves #175901 and a welding jacket #170382 for protection.

what size and lenght of extension cord can be used with this welder? I would like to use a 3200w generator and extension cord.
-
JRob· 14 years ago
It draws a maximum of 20 amps, so any cord rated for 20amps at 110v should work. I have a 25 footer that's made of 10 gauge wire. Seems to work fine.

snakeinthegr· 14 years ago
I use a 10 gauge 100ft extension chord and it welds great. Think it says you can get away with 12 gauge at a 100ft.
Helpful?
-
fabricationiskey21· 14 years ago
The Longer the extension cord you run the more resistance you have going to the welder back to your main power feed! More than 50 feet is not recommended however if you invest in heavy gauge contractor wire 15-20 amp wire your shouldn't have an issue!

Can you weld alloy steels like 4130 chromoly with the Hobart Handler 140 Mig welder ?
-
bemidjisasquatch· 14 years ago
If you had the correct wire and gas i see no problem as long as it's with in the capabilities of the machine. (i.e. Too thick)
Helpful?
-
DarthVicious· 15 years ago
Yes, provided the correct gas mixture is used. Chromoly is most often welded using a Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welder. Have you ever seen welds that look like shiny stacks of nickels? They were most likely done with TIG, although it is possible with MIG welding.

-
doodle35· 15 years ago

-
ProductExpert6· 15 years ago
The welder can handle the chromoly. You would need to get the right welding wire for this. It would require the ER80D2 wire. We do not handle this wire. You would need to purchase this as your local welding supply shops.
