  1. How do you categorize the speed of this press?is it a 16 speed or what is it?

    1. You have to see the drive mechanism to understand it. It only has 2 pulleys but the "variable pulley" can split apart and compress back together causing the v pulley diameter to change. You just move the lever back and forth while its running and watch the tachometer to get to the speed you want. Very slick setup.

    2. Vicoy, machine is infinitely variable ... easy to put at 25 to 50 rpm increments from 524 rpm to over 2000. The digital readout if nice to have.

    3. It is variable speed motor. There is no need to change belt positions. You simply turn a crank handle on the side of the head to adjust the RPM. A digital display on the front of the head displays the RPM. This is a great feature, particularly, if you need to change speed often.

    4. This drill has a CVT ( continously variable transmission) , so technically it can get pretty close to any RPM from about 560rpm all the way up to 2400rpm. It has a handle on the left side of head, which when rotated adjusts the pulley's ratio. You won't be able to get an exact RPM, but you can get close.

  2. Do you have to manually change a belt to change speeds or is it servo controlled?

    1. It adjust with variable speed pulleys. Just move the handle and the speed changes.

    2. The speed control on this drill press is done by changing the belts positions.

    3. Dave , it has two sheaves that move in and out while machine is spinning to change the speeds. This moves the belt in and out the diameter of the pulley. Very effective.

    Can I get replacement parts for this machine when it breaks? I'd rather not have to bring the entire machine back to the store if something breaks.

  4. What is the noise level?

    How loud is this machine? What noise level does it run at?

    1. Even though it has a big 1.5 hp motor and is a 17 in floor model, it runs very quiet to the point to here measuring noise is almost pointless.

    2. This has a normal noise level as that of most selling on the market. It is approximately 70 dB.

  5. Is the base really big enough to provide a stable footing since I assume it is quite top heavy??

    1. The base is large, heavy and has four bolt holes in it, but yes, it is very top heavy with that big motor and the top being cast iron. For my peace of mind and to keep it very stable, I'm fastening my base to a concrete floor plus strapping it down securely near the top, to heavy eye-bolts in the wall studs.
