High Altitude Operation

CAUTION: Operating at an altitude of greater than 2000 feet (610 meters) may affect your engine's performance, fuel consumption, and emissions. To remain emissions compliant and improve engine performance at higher altitudes, a high-altitude kit is required. A high altitude kit includes a carburetor jet resized to help correct air / fuel mixture at altitude. To order a high altitude kit, or if you have additional questions, contact us at 1-877-234-6869. Please note, engines with the high-altitude kit installed operated at lower altitudes could cause severe engine damage and affect emissions compliance. When modified, a tag or decal should be added to the product stating that a high-altitude kit was installed and to remind you to re-service the carburetor (re-jet) when operating in lower altitude environments.

  1. Can 87 octane with ethanol be used in this engine?

    1. We use 87 Octane. Be care with ethanol. Some states very in max amount of water allowed in ethanol. Moisture destroys motors.

    2. Gasoline with up to 10% ethanol (gasohol) or up to 15% MTBE (methyl tertiary butyl ether) is acceptable.

  2. Will this engine be more powerful than a 5HP Briggs?

    This engine will be mounted to a Comet pump. I just want make sure this engine will be as powerful if not more powerful than the Briggs 5 HP 1980 model ?

    1. Yes, possibly. This Ironton unit replaced a B&S 5hp (c. 1994) engine on my pressure washer.

    2. This engine will have more power than a 5hp engine and will work well with a Comet pump that can accommodate a 3/4" diameter shaft and a 3-5/8" bolt pattern.

  3. Is there a torque converter/clutch/gearbox that can attach to this motor for use in a minibike?

    1. Clutches should be readily available. used my clutch from the honda motor I was replacing. Exact fit !

    2. The centrifugal clutch, item #13791 could be used with this engine. See below. Northern does not carry a torque converter for this engine.

  4. Break-in procedure?

    How should this engine be broken in, I don't see any recommendations in the manual.

    1. My manual recommended draining the oil after the first 5 hours and putting fresh oil in. It's probably good to go easy on the engine and not throttle it up too much during the first 5 hours too.

    2. You would change the oil after the first 5 hours of use for the initial break in. The oil should then be checked every day or after 8 hours of continuous use and add oil as needed. Regular maintenance, the oil should be changed after every 50 hours of use.

  5. What is the bolt pattern dimension on the base?

    1. This is a standard 4 bolt setup. I put this on a craftsman tiller and it fit perfectly.

    2. The mounting plate on this unit measures 3.4" x 6.4". It also features a bolt circle of 3-5/8". Bolt circle on a 4-bolt pattern is measured diagonally from center to center of the bolt holes.

  6. Can this engine be used on a mini bike or gokart?

    1. Yes, it would be great for a mini bike of go kart. I replaced the engine on my old Cushman bike with this engine, and its works great!
