  1. temperature restrictions?

    Some hydraulic splitters should not be used below 40 degrees or so, something to do with hydraulic fluid. Is temperature an issue with the Ironton?

    1. The temperature range is -59℉ to +122℉.

  2. when bleeding, refilling or topping hydraulic fluid, is this done with the unit in the vertical position?

    1. When you are bleeding, refilling or topping off the hydraulic fluid you extend the ram to maximum length. Remove oil plug and top off the oil. Turn the handle wheel counter clockwise as fast as possible. The piston rod will retract into the ram and push the air out of the cylinder via the oil plug hole. Top off oil as needed. Replace the oil plug and repeat steps 1-3 as needed To add oil , remove the oil plug and add oil to just below the fill plug and then replace the plug. When bleeding, refilling or topping off the fluid it does not need to be in a vertical position.

  4. Bleed the system....

    How can you remove any excess air that is trapped in the hydraulic system?

    1. To bleed air from this log splitter, follow these steps:
      1. Extend the ram to its maximum length.
      2. Remove the oil plug and top off the oil.
      3. Turn the handwheel (the knob at the cylinder base) counterclockwise as fast as possible. The piston rod will retract into the ram and push air out of the cylinder via the oil plug hole. Top off the oil as needed.
      4. Replace the oil plug and repeat steps 1-3 as needed.
      5. To add oil, remove the oil plug and add oil to just below the fill plug. Then replace the oil plug.

  5. Where do you put more hydrualic oil in, when low?

    1. The Ironton Horizontal Log Splitter has an oil plug located on top of the cylinder between the handles. When removed you can check and fill oil as needed, simply fill to just below the plug itself.
