  1. Will this work for metal?

    Can this drill through metal? I am looking for a smaller drill press that can be used with up to half inch steel and brass.

    1. This drill press is designed to drill a variety of metals such as steel, brass, cast iron and aluminum. Please see our item #42091 for a set of metal drilling bits.

  2. Can this be used to drill through beach stones and beach glass?

    1. This unit can be used on a wide variety of materials. Most beach stone and glass require a high RPM machine such as a rotary tool like our item #4975139. Please follow the material recommended speed requirements and follow all safety instructions.

    2. Yes, first you’ll need to stake a dimple on the work to prevent cracking and prevent the drill bit from creeping when you initially engage the work piece. You will need to research what the proper bit is needed for the material and remember to feed the chuck slowly into the work. Feeding the bit slowly does not imply a slow drill speed. You will need to look at the recommended drill speed setting (you can find it online) which depends on the work material (glass, stone or granite). Feed rate must be slow for this specific machine (lots of in and out of the chuck and clearing/blowing clean the bit while you’re drilling) while using a cooling fluid (water spray) during drilling.

  3. How do you change speeds

    1. To adjust the speed, loosen the belt tension lock knob. Pull the motor toward the front to reposition the belt on the desired pulley. Once the belt is in place, push the motor toward the rear to tighten the belt and secure it by tightening the belt tension lock knob.

  4. How solid is the drill stop? Is it spongy or accurate ? I am looking for a small press that will be accurate for trimming brass. It does need to stop at the same spot repeatedly ?

    1. The drill has a solid stop so it will accurately and consistently stop at the same spot.

  5. Is there a specific square hole drill bit adapter that works with this drill?

    1. Ironton does not manufacturer a square hole drill adapter for the drill press. You may use another brand of square hole adapter on the press. You will need to use an external stand to connect.

    1. The table will tilt. Loosen the hex bolt below the table. Rotate the table to the desired angle shown on the scale. Then, tighten the hex bolt to secure the table tilt.

  8. I want to drill 4 to 6" into sides of 1 x 6 or 1x8* shelving for "hidden shelving" installations. How deep can I drill a continued hole ? I read that the vertical distance the drill can travel in 2" is this correct ?

    1. The drilling capacity is 1/2" diameter. That is the recommended maximum hole size. The vertical stroke distance is 2". With the table and material raised up, the maximum cutting depth would be just less than 2".
