I used 6013 but a 6011 should work. This machine has no fancy accessories inside so it’s a little tricky to keep the arc going. Also make sure your rods are dry doesn’t take much moisture to mess stuff up.

what rods does it work best with?
i just got this welder and a 6011 1/8 wont stay burning what rod should be used? im really thinking ill proably get my money back and by a name brand.

Get the 6013 welding rods.
You will want to get the appropriate size for the power you are using. I used the 1/8" rods for 1/8" steel and the 3/32" for thinner metals. I have successfully welded all the way down to 16ga steel with the 3/32" rods.

On page 2, page 11 and page 16 of the manual for this welder says it works best with 6013 rod. Rod should be for AC use as the 6013 is made to work with AC. The 6013 rod in 1/8 can handle between 80-130 amps depending on thickness and type of material compared to 6011 rod in 1/8 handling between 75-125 amps.

What wattage do you need to run this machine using a generator?

This stick welder draws 9430 watts at 230 volts. It has a NEMA 6-50 plug. Northern Tool doesn't carry a portable generator that accepts a 6-50 plug.
