Product Summary

The IPA grease fitting cleaner opens clogged grease fittings and loosens hardened grease joints. Excellent for maintaining and protecting bearings, control arms, joints, king pins, etc. Flexible hose attachment reaches fittings in difficult areas. This steel tool is designed to be tapped with a hammer to force a light viscosity oil through the tool into the grease joint, breaking up and removing dirt and debris.

  1. What kind of oil?

    1. Use a penetrating oil first to get things loose. Then follow with a heaver oil again then grease. Work the joint to get the oil in everywhere and the grease will follow it.

    2. I used penetrating oil but I think any light oil would work like 3 in one oil

    3. Oil depends on service of part. I typically try automatic transmission fluid first. If that does not work I then use mineral spirits to melt out old hardened grease. If more than the zerk [fitting] is clogged it may take 2 or three Fitting Cleaner tube fulls of cleaner to clean out an assembly that requires greasing. Tool is excellent, does what it is suppose to do.

    6. 3 in 1 oil works great, A very light hydraulic oil would probably work well also.

  2. Can this tool be used horizontally or must it always be used vertically?

    1. The end of the plunger is equipped with an o-ring and it provides a quality seal. Although I have yet to use it upside down I would if the need came up.

    2. I used it horizontally. I filled it vertically, the 3-in-1 oil I used did not run out of the zerk fitting without putting pressure on it. I then used it horizontally, very little leakage, I was surprised, and instructions that came with it are very clear.
