It's a variable speed controlled by a cable/wire mounted on the handle bar of the machine it is mounted onto, just like almost all trimmers and mowers. I just used the original cable that was already on the DR Trimmer.

Is this a variable speed or constant speed that requires extra throtal & running cables

According to the owner's manual there are several throttle configurations for the GSV190, one of which is fixed-speed, but the GSV190LAN1L that I got from Northern is variable speed. At the high end of the mechanism's travel the choke is closed, and at the low end the ignition shutoff is actuated. Yes, you will need a throttle control and cable. Is the mounting bolt circle really 8.5" as listed or is it the standard 8"? All the drawings for similar honda engines show 8".

The GSV190LAN1L that I got from Northern has an 8" bolt circle, which is what the description said at the time I ordered it. The four holes are about .350" diameter, not tapped, and not equally spaced.

What are the differences between GSV190LAN1L vs GSV190AS1A? All the specs according to the Northern website seem to be the same.

The GSV190LAN1L has a N1-type crankshaft end, 5.34 x .86" and does not have a flywheel brake and the GSV190AS1A has a A-type crankshaft end 5.34" X .98" and has a flywheel brake.

The LAN1L has both an N1-type crankshaft end, 5.34 x .86" and no flywheel brake, while the AS1A has an A-type crankshaft end 5.34" X .98" and has a flywheel brake. -Robert@Honda

Is there any reason why this Engine will not work on a log splitter

The GSV model engines are not equipped with a heavy fly wheel, so although it could work, the GCV model engines would be better suited for use on a log splitter. We do offer item 704363 which can be ordered through our parts department by calling 1.800.657.0516.
