There is a chart on the inside of the door and in the manual. The chart shows the settings for welding different types of metals using the types of wire this welder is designed for. The chart shows what type of gas is needed for solid core wire. It also shows what polarity is needed. Polarity is switched manually.

The extension cord must be 12 gauge wire not exceeding 50 feet in length or 10 gauge wire not exceeding 100 feet in length. Always use the shortest cord possible.

Will this weld 1/4" steel in both flux core and mig settings?

From what I see it may require multiple passes with 1/4" steel in either flux or regular shielded. I just got mine a few weeks ago and have welded up to 3/16 with no problem whatsoever.

I just got the Hobart Handler 140 just for that purpose as I was making a project out of old pallet rack beams that are 11 gauge.
Works perfectly on low settings, follow the chart inside the panel for wire feed and voltage settings - you will not be sorry you got it.
