What is the noise level - is this unit quiet?
Want to use this on ceiling above horses being saddled - area is approx 20' x 16'. I am concerned about noise level for the people and the horses working below the unit.

I have this heater mounted on a 7' ceiling in my shop and you can barely hear it when it running, I would say it is one of the quieter electric heaters I have seen.

This unit is very quiet.

ProductExpert10· 15 years ago
With any heater, the electric heaters will be the most quiet . Once the heater reaches a certain temperature, the fan will then come on to circulate the heat. The blower fan will create a low noise like any fan. I doubt the horses or trainers will even notice the noise.

can install this heater without a netral wire?
-
MTTeacher65· 10 years ago
In the US, a 230-volt supply is required, which consists of two hots and a ground. No neutral is needed.

This Fahrenheat Ceiling-Mount heater would need 10 gauge minimum insulated copper conductor (with ground) wire to run power from the breaker/fuse to the heater. Only use copper wire rated at least 75 degrees Celsius. Do not use aluminum wire with this unit.

Will this heater work on 208V
-
LeeOfMN· 14 years ago
Yes, but the wattage will be much lower meaning less heat. U have to jump some jumpers on the unit.

dakotabuilder· 14 years ago
yes, it has a full diagram with it to show you how to change the voltages.
Helpful?
-
ProductExpert31· 15 years ago
Yes, the heater can be field adjusted to 208V. The heat output will be less if you change the voltage to 208V.

Can you put a switch on the electric line
I will be installing in a garage and will not want to run it all the time so I would like to install a wall switch.
-
stevers· 13 years ago
I have this unit wired on to a 30 amp 240 breaker that I just turn the breaker on/off..

Ovationdave· 14 years ago
I have a switch installed in a steel box directly on the unit that is all I use to turn it on/off. It works fine, and I am sure you could wire it in the wall, but it would require more wire, and I preferred to it this way. Just make sure you get a switch capable of handling the current.

-
ProductExpert7· 16 years ago
Yes you can do that. You will want to use the same contacts that the internal thermostat has. You can wire in series with the thermostat.

Does it have an on/off switch or does the thermostat have an off setting?
I would want to turn it completely off at times so need to know if I have to unplug it or can it be set to off by using the thermostat? Thanks

I had the same question and called Fahrenheat. They told that the lowest setting is not off. Therefore, I wired the heater to its own circuit and shut it off with the circuit breaker.

-
ProductExpert10· 16 years ago
There is not an on/off switch, you would adjust it to the lowest setting , which is 40 degrees. The heater does need to be hardwired, so unplugging it is not an option.

Electrical requirement
I see that the requiremnt for the heater is to have it hard wired. Why can't I used a heavy duty 220 extension cord with this heater?
Thanks
-
bov19· 16 years ago
this heater has no plug with it, you have to wire it up with a plug so you can plug it in the outlet. I see no reason y you can't run a short cord out of the heater and then make up an extension cord for the remainder of the distance. The other heater I was talking about was a 2600 and 4000 watt 220 volt heater that was a floor mount which I also purchased from Northern, already was wired with a plug and I made an extension cord that was 25 foot long and code said to use 10 guage wire. The cord coming from the heater was 12 guage but do to the lenght of the cord I made up, 10 guage will not overheat.

bov19· 16 years ago
You can as long as you follow the directions on what guage wire for how long your extension cord is going to be. I used an extension cord on a different heater in the house that didn't have as many watts but was still 220 volts and it was 25' of 10 guage extention cord cable. I made it an actual extention cord so I can unplug from the wall and the heater

I spoke with the manufacturer about the wiring on this heater and using a plug would void its UL (Underwriters Laboratories) approval and void the warranty.
