  1. Does the winch release in a controlled manner? (no free spooling)?

    1. I use this almost exclusively on my deer feeders. To get it to release on a full feeder you might need to turn it in slightly and then back but it does release very smoothly. I have been using then for ten years on many winch feeders.

    2. Yes, it's a smaller version of mine. No free spooling. The auto brake holds the load in place when the handle is not being turned.

    3. The Dutton-Lainson Winch does not freewheel. It winches in and out under load.

  2. Isn't the 1-7/8" drum too small to wind 3/16" cable?

    This relates to the DLB-800. I have used 3/16" stainless steel cable on my sailboat, and I think it would be too stiff to wind around so small a drum.

    1. The drum is capable of properly holding up to 68 feet of 3/16" cable.

    2. Thanks for your question! 3/16" cable is actually the thickness of cable we recommend using on this winch, as it gives you a 4:1 safety factor. Up to 67' of 3/16" cable will fit on this winch's drum.

      However, if you are concerned about installing this thickness of cable on your winch, up to 95' of 5/32" cable or up to 147' of 1/8" cable will also fit on this winch's reel.

  3. Can the crank be replaced with a 'wheel' crank similar to a steering wheel?

    1. A steering wheel crank is not available for the winch.

  4. This winch is listed as vertical lifting. Can it also be used on the horizontal for pulling heavy items under 800 lbs.?

    1. The winch can be used in vertical or horizontal applications, as long as you do not exceed the 800 pound capacity.

  5. Can the cable be free pulled out to reach a load without having the handle being cranked out by a second person at the same time? I operate alone and have to pull the cable out from my truck crane to hook up to loads that are below ground level/downslope

    1. The hand winch does not include the steel cable. Northern Tool does not carry any steel cable for this hand winch..

    If installing a 2" strap to this unit, how is it secured to the drum? (Not shown in any of the images...)

    1. This hand winch has a slot on the large geared wheel to put the strap or cable through and then wind the strap or cable onto the drum.

  10. what is the max length & thickness of rope it will hold? Does it take wire rope only?

    I want to use this with a block & tackle using 3/8 braided rope.
