It is intended to be used with a 12 inch shelf. It would work for an 18 inch shelf, although that would depend on the strength of wood as well as the decrease of the load capacity of the shelf as there could be more cantilevered force than with a 12 inch shelf. The bracket installed on an X track stands just under 12 inches from the mounting wall.
