Shallow Well Pumps

For those living without the luxury of city-supplied water, a well pump is essential to get water out of the ground and into your home. What are the options and how do you choose? There are two basic types: shallow well and deep well. As you would guess, a shallow well water pump, also known as a jet pump, is designed for applications where the well is not as deep, usually no more than 25ft. deep. Shallow well models are positioned above ground in housing as opposed to their deep well counterparts, which are located deep underground. These units can also be used to pull water from a well, lake, or river to supply sprinkler systems. For durability, these shallow well water pumps are commonly constructed of cast iron, stainless steel, and plastic. Another key feature includes overload protection to safeguard the pump from damage in the event of overheating.

The two most important specs to consider when choosing a shallow well water pump is the horsepower of the motor and the gallons per hour (GPH) it pumps. The higher the horsepower, the greater the flow of water that is available. Generally, a ½ HP pump is sufficient for smaller homes with one to two people. Larger homes with more people and more bathrooms benefit from greater horsepower. Larger pumps may also require larger pressure tanks to reduce rapid cycling. To ensure constant water pressure to all faucets in your home, tanks or boosters are available. Northern Tool + Equipment offers a wide range of shallow well water pumps from leading brands, including Burcam, Red Lion, SAER-USA, Speroni, Superior, Flotec, and more.
