Welding FAQ
Can I teach myself to weld at home?
Yes! With a little research, the right equipment and practice, you can become a great welder. Read the instruction/operator’s manual for understanding safety precautions, learning how to properly set up the machine.
How much does it cost to start welding?
You can get started with everything you need for as little as a few hundred dollars.
What items do I need to start welding?
Welder, material, wire or rod, welding gas (depending on the welder), helmet, welding gloves, welding jacket, and power source (many welders can run on standard 120V outlets).
What materials can be welded?
Most types of metals can be welded, the more popular are mild steel, aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and copper. Refer to the machine’s welding chart to confirm you have the right machine for the job. Certain metals like stainless steel and galvanized steel produce vapors when welded that are harmful to one’s health. A welding respirator must be worn in these situations and the addition of a fume extractor is also a good idea.
What type of welding is best for beginners?
MIG (wire feed) is the easiest type of welding to learn. TIG welding is the most difficult. Whatever the type of welding, it is crucial to follow instructions in the operator’s manual for the correct machine set up to get the best results.
How do I know what type of welding I should do?
Depending on the type of material and thickness that usually determines the best welding application. Based on these details, please reference our signage in the Klutch welding aisle with charts providing an easy way to select the best welding application.

You can weld in a shop, in your garage, outside... pretty much anywhere with the right set up. The main thing to keep in mind is safety. Maintain proper safety with adequate ventilation, keep away from flammables/explosives, stay out of the wind, and ensure that anybody standing nearby has the proper Personal Protection Equipment (PPE).
