Not hard to change the belts. Just obnoxious going through so many changes. It doesn't take long with each belt. Better if you have several tools to sharpen at once. Rotations the tools then go to next belt..

To change, align, and start using a belt takes less than a minute. The instructions provided are accurate and no 'workarounds' were necessary.

It's easy. Once you get the hang of it, it could be as little as 10-15 seconds. There are videos out there that show the operation including belt changes.

It's relatively easy to change the belt on this knife and tool sharpener. First, you'll lift and hold the belt change lever to remove the old belt. Second, you'll route the new belt around all 3 pulleys, then release the lever. Overall, it should take less than a minute to change the belt.

Mower Blades?
How is this sharpener at doing lawn rider and mower blades? Most of them have a step in sharpened outer ends of the blades. Also, often, you have to take off a fair amount of material to get past all the nicks.

It works very well by using the coarse belt at high speed. You can remove the angle guide for better access to the mower blade. I would also recommend clamping the blade securely. so you can use both hands to control the "Work Sharp".

Let me clarify. Without the additional angle grinder attachment and the 60 grit belt, It wouldn't be great for lawn mower blades. However, the additional angle grinder attachment should work fine. But I believe the motor is a little underpower for heavy applications.

I would say that sharpening a lawn mower blade wouldn't be the best use of it. I've sharpened a lot of lawn blades over the years using an angle grinder or a cut off blade. Lawn mower blades are usually heavily nicked and require a lot of material removed. This would take forever with this small belts and basically wear your grit belts down quickly. It would probably work for after using your grinder to get a nice edge, but that seems overkill to me on a lawnmower blade.

With the belt moving into the blade edge on one side, how does the sharpener prevent the belt from being cut?
-
RonSGV· 10 years ago
The belts are not directional. This has not been a problem.

The edge should never face an oncoming belt! Watch the supplied video, and read the manual.

pastordl· 11 years ago
As long as it is a flat blade with no serrations or internal curve the angle settings guide holds it so this is not a problem. for other blades use remove the guide and use the downward side of the belt. This is from the instructions and if followed the process works great.

To prevent the belt from being cut, you would place the blade in the guide and then power it through.

Most chipper manufacturers recommend that the blades be machined to keep the proper gap across the entire blade. I would be concerned that I would not be able to control the sweep across the blade well enough to keep it even. The disk sharpener WS3000 may be able to keep the geometry since you can sharpen the entire face at once. I would be leery of this though.

This tool gives you some guidance for the angle of the blade. A wet stone unless hooked to a fixture does not. You will need to know the angle you need for your knives. The second benefit would be with a belt you will get a slight convex on your edge. The convex makes for a more durable edge life.

This model shows a cutting angle of 15 to 30 degrees; the smaller model says 40 and 50 degrees. I am confused by the big difference.
I want a sharpener for kitchen knives, scissors and lawnmower blades. Which unit makes more sense given the big difference in cutting angle?
-
Bobbyharpoon· 9 years ago
This tool can be set up to do each of your tools listed. You may be able to see all three functions in YouTube videos. There have been several people review it. Plus there is a video with Ken Onion explaining it a bit.

The Ken onion unit uses 1/2 the total angle of the blades angle. This angle is more commonly used by professionals, like Ken Onion. Therefore 25 deg on the KO unit is equal to the 50 (25x2) on the smaller home unit.

The Onion Edition has more power and versatility. There are also wide angle slots on the guide. The small angles are on the top. I like the Onion much better. It has enough power to do the heavier chores.

The smaller model, item #156115 uses two guides while the Ken Onion Edition has an a fully adjustable guide in increments of 1degree from 15 to 30 degrees. The smaller edition with the two guides is not adjustable in increments of 1 degree but provides a 50° guide for hunting and outdoor knives (25° per bevel); and a 40° guide for thinner blades and kitchen knives (20° per bevel).
You can sharpen a lawnmower blade on either product. See smaller edition below.Helpful?

it is a leather belt - ?
a leather belt for polishing ?
-
Bobbyharpoon· 9 years ago
There is not a polishing belt in the kit. They do have an aftermarket kit. I believe it is a fabric belt that in use has diamond paste applied. There are a couple companies that make aftermarket leather belts for the machine. I have not tried to use the leather belt yet. Hopefully soon.

Medium grit would be recommended for use with dull kitchen knives and pocketknives. Fine and course grit is better used for damaged blades You can see my product recommendation below to view that replacement belt kit.
