Do you have to pump the handle to retract the ram after each split? If so, does the slowness of pumping the ram back become annoying?
-

the ram is spring loaded, when you release pressure it begins to retract automatically, you need only retract the ram enough to remove the split wood, perhaps a couple of inches, thus if your wood is all more or less the same length...easy

CentennialJim· 15 years ago
To retract the ram you turn the valve at the base of the hydraulic unit. What helps is to not completely retract it, but just enough so that the next log barely fits. If you have a lot of wood to split and you are relying on this splitter it will take a lot of time and probably isn't for you. If you have a few that won't split with an axe/maul and want some mechanical assistance, this is perfect.

There is a nob on the ram. I turned it slowly to return the ram to near the size of log I was splitting. I saved time.

no there is a knob to release pressure from pump . speed of retraction is normal for a pump jack and not annoying
Helpful?
-
Yampwc· 15 years ago
Nope it has a twist release at the back and you unscrew, the ram comes back then you re-tighten it. It was not annoying to me.

Simply turn the knurled handle counterclockwise to retract the Ram.
Helpful?
-
RusticRose· 15 years ago
No. The ram retracts by turning the knurled handle counterclockwise. You can make it retract quickly, if you like, or slower.

Do the levers operate independantly or in tandem?
-
DallasLogging· 12 years ago
They are independent. In fact one side is smaller than the other. I found on really tough logs I would switch to the smaller valved handle which moved the ram slower, but also was easier to pump, when I couldn't pump the large valved side.
Helpful?
-
GT73· 15 years ago
both. the left handle moves the log quicker while right handle moves slower with more power to split tough logs
Helpful?
-
Yampwc· 15 years ago
Independantly, one is for a more powerful thrust and one is more for nothcing it up and the harder logbreaks. Pretty effective actually.

WallaceC· 15 years ago
I found that the right side pump handle moves the ram a shorter distance than the left, however using both in tandem action works as well as just using one. Besides it makes for a good workout. Once you have the length of your log you can stop the ram during retraction and cut down on the forward distance it must travel to make contact with the log.

The levers on this Wel-Bilt manual log splitter operate independently.
Helpful?
-
RusticRose· 15 years ago
I USE THE HANDLES SEPARATELY, BUT THEY WILL WORK IN TANDEM.
Helpful?
-
pselaphid· 15 years ago
Independently. You start with the left, longer travel, lever until tension is built, then switch to right, which has a shorter travel and generates more torque (if that's the right term). Once the split has started, you can go back to the longer travel lever to force it through the split.

Rick23· 15 years ago
To be honest you can use them either way, In tandum one behind the other or I found it to be a little easier to use the left handle to move the ram against the log [ it seems to move the ram faster] and then i use the right handle to split the log [ it seems to move the ram slower but with more force] I hope this helps with your question!!

does it come with wheels ?
-
jwminny· 12 years ago
There are two wheels at the base of the unit WHEN STANDING VERTICALLY. I use the wheels to roll the unit (covered) under an eave of the house when it remains (dry) when not in use.

The heavy end has two small wheels. Suitable for rolling across firm ground or pavement. They're not widely spaced enough to be stable on rough ground, and they have very little ground clearance.

Is the log splitter when delivered filled with hydraulic fluid? The manual does not have any info about filling the fluid for the 1st time.
-
log34jam· 12 years ago
Yes: fluid is included. Tool is ready for immediate use. It does not state this before you purchase, but does in the operating manual included with the tool.

My unit was filled and did not have to be filled for many years of service. There is a small rubberized "button" on the surface of the jack (near the "bottom) which can readily be removed with strong fingernails. Fill it completely (with the handles in the BACK position) and then replace the rubber button (most likely have to use a blunt (NOT SHARP) screwdriver to re-seat. Be careful to NOT puncture or damage the button!

Can this Log Splitter be used on big logs? say 2 feet in diameter
-
DonInMO· 12 years ago
I'd say 2 ft dia is about maximum. With large dia, might have to turn log 2-3 times before first good split. I have split 18-20 in walnut & didn't think it was too difficult.

DallasLogging· 12 years ago
You might have trouble with splitting something that big. I was able to use it on 13" logs and it started having issues there. It would push the log up instead of split it. I had to hold the log in place. It has the power to split the log, just not a high enough blade. I suppose you can weld on an extension to the blade which would resolve this issue but it might be easier to chain saw or us a maul and sledge the 2' log in two and then use this splitter to finish the job.

I have split logs that big but the unit didnt really like it too much and you have to keep rotating the log taking chunks out at a time
Helpful?
-
rembetis· 12 years ago
It's certainly not designed for logs that big, and you'd probably have to hold them in place until the jack pressed it against the splitting edge, but if they are somewhat dry, you might be able to get away with cracking them on one side and rotating 180 degrees until you get a full split.

The max log length is 18", but what about the max log diameter? What can this handle?
-
DallasLogging· 12 years ago
I started having trouble around 13". The log would start to tilt up. If an extension was welded on the top of the blade, that would prevent the tilting but as I mentioned to another person asking about 2' logs, it might be easier to cut very large logs in two with a chain saw, then finish them off with the splitter.

I have split 14" green oak with no problem. The thing is pretty powerful. I recommend that the log end on the plunger side be flat against it. An angled piece on the plunger side puts some strain on the welds. On the splitter side it doesn't matter.

How do you check, replace the hydraulic oil and beleed it ?
-
dmm9623· 14 years ago
Procedure is in the manual. Extend the ram, top off the oil, open valve quickly to allow ram to retract. Do this until oil reservoir is nearly full.

The Wel-Bilt Horizontal Log Splitter has an oil plug located on top of the cylinder between the handles. When removed you can check and fill oil as needed, simply fill to just below the plug itself. Bleeding the cylinder is done a few simple steps that are detailed in the manual. Basically the ram is extended, oil filled, then retracted quickly to force any air out of the unit.
