Can you use 1/4" cable on this machine?
I am going to use the winch to lift a 300 lb load that already has a 1/4" cable attached. Can I just thread the cable onto the spool? Total cable length <20'

with 20' of 1/4" cable you might run out of spool before you get it up,just a thought.

It is recommended that you use 5/32" cable.

Could you put this on an atv to lift a snow plow?

As long as the plow is under the capacity, this can be used on a snow plow. Proper mounting and setup would be the users responsibility.

Can this be wired to work on AC
Can you wire a DC winch to plug into a normal 110 outlet?

NO.

ProductExpert40· 13 years ago
A DC (direct current) winch like this Warn utility winch cannot be wired to work on AC power (alternating current). Warn does not have a transformer to change AC power to the 12 Volt DC power required to run this winch on either.

Is the winch / motor water proof? Can it be left in the bed of the truck un covered, in the rain / snow elements?
-
jaredn· 13 years ago
It is weather resistant. I have one mounted on my 4 wheeler and one on my truck crane, both stay out doors year round. The truck crane winch is about 4 years old and still works fine.

The WARN Utility Winch should always be stored in a protected, clean, dry area when not in use.

Is this hard wired or can I just clip it to the battery when is used?
-
speedracer305· 14 years ago
I bought alligator clips and clip it on to my spare boat battery and it works great.

This utility winch comes with battery connector cables that have ends with terminals, not alligator clip connectors. Click the link below to view compatible quick connect plugs that would allow faster connection to the battery.

How much does the brake hold?
I am thinking of using this for a swing keel on a boat. The keel is about 900#. I need to be able to power it up and down, hold where ever I stop it and a manual back up crank would be very good.

speedracer305· 14 years ago
i'm not sure but my boat weight about 3000 lbs and I pull it up a slight hill with the WARN and the brake doesn't seem to have any problems holding it/no slipping so far. I have had it for about seven months.

ProductExpert29· 14 years ago
The braking capacity of the WARN 1700 DC is the same as the pulling, 1700 lbs. All winches are designed for pulling horizontally, and are not meant to hold a vertical load. A hoist should be used for vertical applications.

I need a longer electrical lead, about 25 foot to reach my trailer including a disconnect. Ideas? Thanks!!
What guage cable do I need to buy to make this lead?
-
Bear609· 15 years ago
I looked around for a cheap set of jumper cables, if you are using 1700# winch you can get by with #6 wire size, but I would go larger if possible to reduce the line loss (Amps). Just cut of the clamps and solder on the ends. You can buy quick disconnects at Northern or other places on the net.

This Warn winch comes with 12 gauge wire originally. To safely extend this out to 25 feet, you will need to use 6 gauge wire.

Can I convert this winch to a rope/capstan config?
I want to replace the steel cable/capstan and install a rope/capstan. The capstan must have an open end to loop the rope on to the capstan while in use. Does either of the 2 rope capstan's you sell fit the Warn 1700 DC winch? Is there a kit available to do this? Is there a rope/capstan conversion kit for any of your winches?
1 answer-

The manufacturer does not recommend using rope.

could this winch pull and hold roughly 300lbs on an incline without slipping out cable.
1 answer-
ProductExpert41· 13 years ago
This winch is capable of pulling the 300 pounds up the incline. It is not capable of holding the weight though without slippage happening.
