Dry running this submersible pump is not a matter of time, but one of temperature and amperage draw.
Dry running will increase the motor temperature as well as the amperage. When the threshold is reached, a thermal protector will open, stopping operation. When the motor cools, and the motor becomes reenergized, it will start again whether water is present or not. The thermal protector will weaken over time, and it is not recommended to rely on this as a start-stop mechanism, or as a “float” switch.
