I'm using a 700 Kodiak but I think a 450 would do fine. My property is uneven so the extra power does help when you hit a dirt pile of bump a tree though. I mow for a few hours, let my fan cool my engine while engine off, start it up and circulate the radiator fluid, cut it off again to see if fan comes back on. Takes about 5 minutes to get back mowing again. Probably overkill but my ATV cost more than the mower so rather be cautious.

I use a JD D130 with 22hp engine and it does fine. I would suggest a mid size ATV or larger. This is a heavy item to pull

What happens when you mow over a hidden rock?
-
vfrj· 4 years ago
The blades do swing on the rotor, so they can bounce out of the way. I have hid plenty of hidden stumps and it usually just bangs around and keeps going. I'm sure it's not good for it, but it hasn't broken yet. I'm sure rocks would be worse and you'd have to sharpen blades more often.

Rocks may dull or chip the blade over time. It would be recommended to check for patches of rocks before mowing if possible.

Max Grass Height and Hillside use.
What is the max height of grass this mower will cut and is the engine set up with an oil pump system designed to mow hillsides or is just splash oil?
-
Nickntexas· 8 years ago
Not sure about the splash oil question but I mow my very steep ditch with no problem. I've moved down 4" youpon which is a very hardy Bush with no problem. If I had to guess thick grass 6' tall at 8mph would not be an issue. I've mowed over much worse.

This rough cut mower has a range of 3 inches to 7 inches cutting height so 7 inches is the maximum height for grass cutting.
The engine is splash lubrication and does not have an oil pump.Helpful?

I see a regular trailer hitch in the picture. In a manual I found for this or a similar mower it talked about a hitch pin. Is the mower in the picture with the hitch what you get when you order from Northern Tool? Thanks.
1 answer-
ProductExpert12· 5 years ago
This mower has a 2" coupler as pictured. It does use a pin for the articulating portion of the hitch so it can be adjusted to different positions.

The ignition switch for this is on the remote operator control console. It does require a key to be inserted to allow the engine to be started.
