how do you change the chain on the saw?

Step-by-Step: Replacing the Chain on a Stihl MS 251
1. Ensure the Saw Is Off and CoolEngage the chain brake (push it forward).
Let the saw cool down completely if it was recently used.
Disconnect the spark plug boot for added safety.
2. Remove the Side Cover
Use your scrench or a socket wrench to loosen the two nuts on the side cover (right side of the saw).
Remove the clutch cover carefully — the chain brake is inside it, so don’t force it.
3. Release the Chain Tension
Turn the chain tensioner screw counterclockwise (located between the nuts or on the side, depending on version).
This loosens the chain so it can be removed easily.
4. Remove the Old Chain
Slide the guide bar slightly back toward the saw.
Carefully lift the chain off the sprocket and the bar groove.
5. Install the New Chain
Position the new chain onto the sprocket first (behind the clutch drum).
Lay the chain into the bar groove, making sure the cutting teeth face forward on the top side of the bar.
The sharp cutting edges should move away from the saw on the top, and toward the saw on the bottom when rotating.
Reinstall the Side Cover
Replace the side cover over the bar studs and lightly hand-tighten the nuts.
Make sure the tension adjuster pin lines up with the hole in the bar.
7. Adjust Chain Tension
Turn the tension screw clockwise until the chain snugly fits in the bar groove but can still be pulled around by hand.
You want about 1/8 inch of give when lifting the chain in the middle of the bar.
8. Tighten the Bar Nuts
Once the tension is correct, tighten both bar nuts firmly with the scrench.
9. Final Check
Release the chain brake.
Make sure the chain moves freely around the bar when pulled by hand (wear gloves!).
Check the tension again after a short use — new chains stretch and may need a second adjustment.
