Is the motor/housing a standard configuration so that one could swap it out for eg, a 3 phase motor? Understanding of course that this would void any warranty, I'm just looking to know how modular this is for a tinker.

Thanks for reaching out. We don't have a sanding drum specific to this sander/buffer. It can be used with sanding drums with a 5/8" bore.

Is this too fast for sharpening pocket knives?

The belt speed is faster than what is typically recommended for sharpening pocket knives.

Can you get smaller contact wheels like the 1/2" and 3/4" for doing small radius shaping when making knives?

We appreciate your question. On this machine, the flat sanding platen in the center serves as the working surface. We do not offer smaller wheels for this model. For smaller projects, we recommend the T32459 Sander/Grinder.
