Set the scale upon a level ground. Position the scale right under the coupler so that the ball will fit into the coupler's socket. Lower the trailer down until its weight is fully supported by the scale and not the jack. Then use the scale's gauge to determine the tongue weight. Note that the load should be aligned properly and centered on the scale platform. If it is off-center, it could introduce side loads that interfere with the scale’s mechanism. Side loads can cause the piston inside the scale’s cylinder to bind, leading to incorrect readings. These bindings can prevent the piston from moving freely and cause friction, which results in a lower or inconsistent weight measurement. Take multiple readings to ensure that the scale is giving consistent results. If the readings vary, it may indicate an issue with alignment, scale calibration, or external forces affecting the measurement.
