There's 2 holes on each side of the mounting lid - these holes are on a 1/2" lip that runs around the entire unit. Therefore, this lip where the holes are fits totally flush to the roof. The holes are not anywhere above or close to the enclosed radio and speakers. If you want to be 100% safe you can use some silicone around the bolts but not required.

Roof Mounting
Another questioner has asked this same question but did not receive a good answer. If the unit is mounted to a roof, does the roof require drilling holes through which water can leak? If the unit is to be mounted using a sticky tape or glue, what about roofs that have sound deadening padding, or a headliner?

I drilled my roof but I put silicone around bolts so they won't leak.

This REI roof mount radio would need to have holes drilled through the top of the cab. You would want to use a weather sealant at the hole so it does not leak. Sticky tape or glue would not support this unit. You also would want to leave the sound deadening headliner in place.

Power connection
Is this radio like most that require both a switched 12v and a constant 12v connection for station memory? If so this constant 12v connection can discharge the battery if whatever it is mounted in is not used regularly.
-
jwp2· 9 years ago
This is true, I hooked ours up direct to a constant power supply. The memory and the digital display uses so little amperage, that over the course of 4 days and nights, without cranking the unit, there have been no issues in starting. If you do have an extended period of time of non-use---pull the fuse. the worse that can happen, is that you will have to reset the time and your pre-set stations--better than jump starting the machine.

Can I add an exterior cassette player to this product?
-
Booder· 11 years ago
My experience with any kind of auxillary input is: if you have the wire to connect between the two sources, it should work. I have tried electric guitars through car stereos and about anything else you can think of. Sometimes just for an experiment! Yes you should be able to play a tape player through this unit.

The unit comes with a jack to plug other music players in, but the cassette player would have to have the wire with plug for this to work. The manufacturer does not recommend any other type of connection such as trying to wire the cassette player into the unit directly.

Another roof mount question
You said that a metal top plate gets attached to the roof first. Is that plate on the top (outside) of the roof or the underside? Also does a hole have to be made through the roof for the antenna? The antenna is not shown so I can't see what it looks like or where it connects to the radio.
-
mendie711· 11 years ago
Underside of roof. Yes, hole has to be made somewhere. The antenna can be side mounted if needed, but the roof is the most logical place.

The metal plate that the radio is mounted to is attached to the roof on the inside. If the roof does not include a hole for the antenna, a hole would need to be drilled.

How does this attach to the roof?
-
ProductExpert5· 11 years ago
This unit has a metal mounting plate that must be fastened to a flat area on the roof with the supplied quantity of 12 #6 self tapping screws that penetrate the roof matting and secure directly. Some drilling may be required depending on the type of matting such as hard composite.

Antenna included
Is the included antenna a standard-type "set"-length, external-dipole, requiring drilling for installation? Does it use the standard "push-in" style plug/receptacle, to the radio?
Or am I overlooking a link showing the antenna-design?
Just curious before I place the order.
-
ProductExpert5· 11 years ago
The included antenna has a fixed length of 14 inches. Drilling is required. It does not have the push in style plug as you must slide the mounting stud through the drilled hole and then proceed to connect the 60 inch connection cable with the securing nut to fasten the antenna on the opposite side to the metal surface. If the surface is fiberglass make sure to run a ground wire for better reception.

It's a flexible black rubber antenna with 60" cable. You can mount anywhere you see fit. Drilling to mount is required.
